Chapter 6 - The Echo of a Ghost

The rhythmic beep-beep-beep of the hospital monitor slowed, settling into a steady, reliable pulse that grated against the jagged edges of Dominic’s nerves. Through the thick glass partition, he watched the lead physician pull off his surgical gloves and drop them into a bin, finally turning his gaze toward the corridor.

Dominic’s fingers were still white-knuckled against the glass. Lorenzo stood beside him, the secure tablet still glowing in his palm with the phantom message from a dead man: “Check the second heartbeat, Dominic. The child isn't yours.”

The heavy sliding door of the isolation room hissed open, and the doctor stepped out into the hallway, his face drawn with fatigue.

"Her vitals are stabilizing," the doctor said, holding up a hand before Dominic could push past him. "The stress-induced arrhythmia triggered an emergency cardiovascular response, but she and the infant are out of immediate danger. However, Mr. Moretti, she cannot handle another shock like that. If you have domestic disputes to settle, take them elsewhere."

Dominic didn't answer. He brushed past the doctor and stepped into the dim, antiseptic quiet of the room.

Claire was lying with her eyes closed, her breathing shallow but even. In the bassinet beside her, the tiny infant stirred, letting out a soft, mewling cry before settling back into sleep. Dominic walked slowly to the side of the plastic cot, looking down at the small face wrapped in a blue-striped hospital blanket.

“The child isn't yours.”

The words burned in his mind like acid. He knew Julian Vance—the uncle who had supposedly died in a warehouse fire twenty years ago during the syndicate wars—was a master of psychological warfare. Julian had built an empire on lies, deception, and turning family against family. But the encrypted terminal log on Lorenzo’s tablet didn't lie about the network routing. It was the same proprietary encryption key Dominic’s father had used exclusively with his brother before the betrayal.

A soft rustle of sheets made Dominic turn. Claire’s dark eyes were open, watching him with a quiet, devastating clarity. She didn't look angry anymore. She looked profoundly, exhaustively tired.

"You read it, didn't you?" Claire’s voice was barely a whisper, scraping against her throat.

Dominic froze, his chest tightening. "Read what, Claire?"

"The message," she said, her gaze fixed steadily on his face. "The one Julian sent to your network. The one questioning who the father of this child is."

Dominic’s breath caught. He stepped closer to the bed, his storm-gray eyes searching hers, desperate for a denial, a flash of righteous fury, anything to erase the poison of Julian’s words. "Claire... tell me it's a lie. Tell me he’s manipulating us."

"Julian is manipulating everything," Claire said, her voice trembling slightly as she turned her head toward the window. "He’s been manipulating this family since before we met, Dominic. But that doesn't mean the secret he’s using isn't real."

The air left the room. Dominic felt the floor drop away beneath his feet, the walls of the sterile hospital room closing in with suffocating force.

"What are you saying?" Dominic whispered, the words tearing out of his throat.

"I’m saying that before I married you, before I ever stepped foot into your father’s estate, I was trapped in Julian’s orbit," Claire said, tears finally spilling over her lashes and cutting tracks down her pale cheeks. "And when Julian found out I was pregnant three months ago, before the asset freeze, before the boardroom confrontation... he wasn't threatening to kill me, Dominic. He was offering to keep my past a secret from you if I handed over the maritime keys."

Dominic staggered back a step, his hand gripping the metal rail of the bassinet. The empire, the money, the federal raid, the betrayal in the boardroom—it all suddenly rearranged itself into a much darker, much more personal puzzle.

"You didn't steal the two point eight million," Dominic realized, his voice hollow. "And you didn't just move the assets to protect the harbor. You were paying him off."

May you like

Claire closed her eyes, a single sob breaking through her lips. "I was trying to buy our future before you ever found out about my past. And now, Julian has the money, the harbor, and the truth."
