Chapter 2 - The Mother-in-Law’s Defense

Margaret Vance didn't flinch as Sergeant Kincaid turned his cold, calculating gaze toward her. Instead, she adjusted her cardigan, chin raised with the stubborn, entitled arrogance of a woman who believed her family name shielded her from the laws of ordinary mortals.
"Officers, you have to understand the kind of pressure my son is under," Margaret said, her tone dripping with manufactured exhaustion as if she were talking to unruly children at a grocery store. "Ethan works seventy hours a week at the logistics firm to pay the rent, and this ungrateful girl does nothing but spend his hard-earned money on frivolous luxuries. Formula, diapers, unnecessary doctor visits—she’s bleeding him dry."
Officer Ramos, the younger of the two patrolmen, stepped closer to Clara and knelt down on the linoleum floor. He glanced at the baby, his expression softening instantly as he noticed the faint, dark bruises circling the infant's tiny throat.
"Ma'am, I need you to hand me the baby," Ramos said gently, his voice a stark contrast to Margaret's grating chatter. "Let me get the medics in here right now."
Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second, her arms tightening instinctively. But looking into Ramos’s steady, professional eyes, she finally let go, transferring her newborn into the officer’s large, careful hands. As Ramos stood up and backed toward the doorway, signaling for the waiting EMTs in the hall, a cold wave of emptiness washed over Clara’s chest.
"She's lying!" Ethan shouted, his panic boiling over as he saw the paramedics stepping past the broken door with a medical kit. He pointed a shaking finger at Clara. "She's unstable! Look at her! She fell down the stairs! She's trying to ruin my career because I told her we couldn't afford a vacation this year!"
"Shut your mouth, sir," Sergeant Kincaid barked, stepping directly into Ethan's personal space and forcing the larger man to stumble backward against the couch.
Margaret bristled, stepping forward with her eyes flashing. "Do you know who my family is? Do you know how many police commissioners and district judges I have on speed dial? You cannot walk into this apartment and arrest a rising executive over a hysterical woman's lies!"
Sergeant Kincaid pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt, the metallic click sounding like a death knell in the quiet room. "Ma'am, your son’s open-line 911 call recorded every single word spoken in this room for the last six minutes. Including your helpful suggestion that a wife and baby make good punching bags."

Margaret’s mouth snapped shut.
