Chapter 3 - The Ride to Nowhere

The back of the police cruiser smelled of industrial disinfectant and old vinyl.
Clara sat upright in the passenger seat of a second squad car idling outside the building, wrapped in a rough wool blanket handed to her by a female paramedic. Through the rain-streaked window, she watched as two officers led Ethan out of the building in handcuffs. He wasn't swaggering anymore; his head was ducked down, his expensive coat shielding his face from the flashing red and blue lights of the cruisers.
Margaret was brought out moments later, protesting loudly, her voice carrying sharply across the wet pavement until an officer firmly guided her into the back of a transport van.
The front passenger door of Clara’s cruiser opened, and Sergeant Kincaid slid inside, shaking the rain off his jacket. He turned to look at her, his expression a mix of professional grimness and deep, quiet empathy.
"The paramedics checked the baby," Kincaid said softly, keeping his voice steady. "Oxygen levels are stabilizing. They’re taking the infant to City General for observation, but the doctor says another ten seconds... and we wouldn't be having this conversation."
Clara closed her eyes, letting out a long, ragged breath that she felt like she had been holding since the day she married Ethan. A single tear tracked through the dirt and dried blood on her cheek, but she didn't wipe it away.
"Thank you," she whispered, her voice cracking. "If I hadn't kept that line open..."
"You saved your child's life, Mrs. Calloway," Kincaid interrupted gently. He reached into his pocket and handed her a small plastic evidence bag containing her phone. "The precinct has a secure copy of the dispatch recording. Your husband's attorney can try to spin whatever story he wants in court, but that audio file is ironclad. He’s going downtown for attempted homicide, child abuse, and domestic battery."
Clara looked down at the phone. For three years, Ethan had convinced her that she was weak, that she had no voice, that without his paycheck she would starve in the streets. Now, he was sitting in the back of a squad car, and she was holding the key to his entire destruction.
"Where are we going?" Clara asked, looking out at the dark, rain-swept streets.

"Safe house first, then the hospital to check on your baby," Kincaid replied, putting the car into gear. "And then, Mrs. Calloway, we’re going to help you contact a very good family law attorney. Because based on what we found in your husband's financial records downstairs, Ethan Calloway is about to find out what happens when you leave a paper trail of abuse."
