Chapter 5 - The Midnight Visitor

The rain continued to hammer against the single-pane window of the safe house, turning the glass into a distorted, shimmering blur of city lights.

It was 3:14 AM. The hallway outside Clara's room was dead silent, save for the rhythmic, low hum of the baseboard heater.

Clara lay awake on top of the bedspread, fully clothed, her eyes fixed on the ceiling shadow cast by the window frame. Her body throbbed with bruises, but her mind was razor-sharp, turning over the pieces of her new reality. She had survived the night, but she knew this was only the opening skirmish. Margaret Vance had political connections that ran deep into the state judiciary, and Ethan had spent years cultivating relationships with corrupt corporate partners who would do anything to keep their financial secrets buried.

A soft, muffled thud echoed from the front hallway.

Clara froze. She slipped off the bed in total silence, her bare feet making no sound against the worn linoleum floor. She crept toward the bedroom door, pressing her ear against the solid wood.

Creak.

The sound of floorboards shifting near the front entrance.

The safe house was supposed to be completely secure. No one outside of Sergeant Kincaid and his direct superior knew this address. Yet someone was inside.

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her hands didn't shake this time. She backed away from the door, her eyes scanning the dark room for a weapon. Her fingers brushed against a heavy glass water pitcher resting on the bedside table. She gripped it by the handle, lifting it slowly as she positioned herself directly beside the bedroom door frame.

The doorknob turned. Slowly. Deliberately.

A sliver of pale hallway light cut across the dark carpet as the door swung inward. A tall silhouette stepped into the room, moving with practiced, silent stealth, holding something heavy in a gloved hand.

May you like

Clara raised the heavy glass pitcher, her muscles tensing for a lethal strike, when a low, urgent whisper cut through the dark room.

"Don't move, Mrs. Calloway. I'm not here to hurt you... I'm here because the man who locked your husband up just sold you out."
