Chapter 6 - The Broken Shield

The heavy glass water pitcher trembled in Clara’s grip, the cold condensation slick against her palm, but her stance remained braced and lethal.
"Step into the light where I can see you," Clara whispered, her voice carrying a razor-sharp edge that left no room for argument.
The silhouette inside the doorway hesitated, then slowly raised both hands to show they were empty. A tall man in a dark trench coat stepped forward, the sliver of hallway light catching the sharp angles of his face and the silver badge tucked hurriedly into his breast pocket. It wasn't Sergeant Kincaid.
It was Detective Vance, the senior precinct investigator who had briefly interviewed Kincaid at the scene earlier that evening.
"Put the pitcher down, Mrs. Calloway," Vance urged in a harsh, hurried whisper, glancing back nervously toward the dark hallway. "You’re in danger here. The address of this safe house was pulled from the precinct's encrypted database less than twenty minutes ago."
Clara didn't drop the pitcher. Her amber eyes narrowed as she studied the man standing in her room. "Pulled by whom? Sergeant Kincaid told me nobody else knew where we were."
"Kincaid is a good cop, but he’s low on the totem pole," Vance replied, taking a cautious step closer while keeping his palms visible. "Margaret Vance didn't spend thirty years cultivating political favors for nothing. Half the command staff in this district are on her payroll or terrified of her reach. An emergency transfer order was just signed for your husband, and a detail has been dispatched to intercept you before sunrise."
"Intercept us?" Clara repeated, the word tasting like ash. "You mean silence us."
"I mean take the USB drive you took from Ethan's office and bury you both so deep the federal marshals will never find the bodies," Vance said bluntly. He reached into his coat pocket, not for a weapon, but for a set of heavy brass keys. "I didn't come here to watch a mother and her newborn get sold out by corrupt brass. I came here to get you out."
Clara stared at the keys in his hand, her mind racing through the horrific web of betrayal. If the precinct database was compromised, staying in the safe house was a death sentence. But following a stranger into the dark night carried its own terrifying risks.

Before she could speak, a heavy, metallic crash echoed from the front entryway of the safe house, followed instantly by the sound of heavy boots splintering the back kitchen door.
