Chapter 9 - The Decryption Room

The elevator doors opened into a sprawling, brightly lit subterranean command center humming with banks of supercomputers and tactical monitors. Federal analysts in dark suits sat at long rows of desks, their fingers flying across keyboards as satellite feeds and financial ledgers flickered across massive wall displays.
Eleanor led Clara and the detective toward a glass-walled conference room at the center of the floor. A hot cup of tea and a clean blanket were already waiting on the table.
"Sit down, Clara," Eleanor instructed gently, pulling out a chair for her. Once Clara was seated with her baby resting safely in a makeshift bassinet beside her, Eleanor turned her attention to Detective Vance. "Did you secure the perimeter?"
"The local detail is tearing apart the safe house right now, believing we're still trapped in the crawlspace," Vance reported, tossing a small object onto the conference table with a dull clack.
It was the USB drive Clara had smuggled out of Ethan’s home office.
Eleanor picked up the thumb-sized drive, turning it over in her fingers. "Is this the primary backup ledger?"
"Everything Ethan tried to hide is on that drive," Clara said, her voice steady and clear as she looked the retired judge dead in the eye. "Every offshore shell company, every forged signature on my pre-nuptial trust deeds, and the wire receipts proving he laundered money through corporate escrow accounts to fund his lifestyle."
Eleanor offered a thin, approving smile. "Your husband thought he was a financial genius, Mrs. Calloway. But arrogant men always make one fatal mistake: they leave a digital fingerprint when they think nobody is watching."
She walked over to a dedicated secure terminal near the wall, plugging the USB drive into an isolated decryption port.
Within seconds, lines of encrypted data began cascading down the monitor screen, resolving into detailed spreadsheets, recorded phone conversations, and notarized property deeds.
One file in particular caught Eleanor’s eye. She clicked it open, her eyebrows rising as she scanned the corporate entity listed as the primary beneficiary of Ethan’s overseas accounts.
"Well, well," Eleanor murmured, her voice dropping into a dangerous register. "It appears your husband wasn't just embezzling from his own firm, Clara. He was acting as a proxy wash-man for a much larger syndicate."
Before she could elaborate, a harsh, blaring alarm echoed through the subterranean command center.
The main wall monitor flickered violently, cutting away from the financial spreadsheets to display a live security feed from the surface checkpoint upstairs.

A convoy of three black unmarked SUVs had just rammed through the federal compound’s outer security gates, their headlights cutting through the pouring rain as armed men in tactical gear poured out onto the tarmac.
