Chapter 10 - The Emergency Ward

The sterile white lights of the Saint Jude Medical Center trauma bay flickered overhead as a team of nurses and obstetricians wheeled Emily's gurney down the frantic corridor at a breakneck speed. The steady, frantic beep-beep-beep of heart monitors echoed off the tiled walls, blending with the sound of Emily's ragged, shallow breaths.
"Hold my hand, Mrs. Hartwell, stay with us," a doctor urged, his voice firm and professional as he checked her vitals. "We're prepping for an emergency C-section. The contractions are too close together; we can't wait."
Emily gripped the metal rail of the gurney, her knuckles white, sweat plastered across her forehead. The physical pain was absolute, eclipsing every thought, every memory of the penthouse, the gala, and the betrayal. But beneath the agony, her mind remained terrifyingly sharp.
As they burst through the swinging double doors of the surgical suite, a nurse rushed forward to clip an IV line into Emily's arm.
"Doctor," the nurse said, her voice laced with urgent tension. "We have an incoming call on the secure desk line from federal marshals. They're executing the asset freeze warrant on Hartwell Global right now, but they need Mrs. Hartwell's digital signature key to authenticate the transfer logs before the board shuts down the servers."
Emily turned her head sharply on the pillow, her eyes locking onto the doctor. "No," she gasped out, her voice cracking with fierce determination. "Give me... give me the tablet."
"Mrs. Hartwell, you need to focus on the delivery—"
"Give me the tablet!" Emily commanded, the sheer authority in her voice cutting through the clinical chaos of the room.
A nurse hesitantly handed her the sterile electronic pad. The screen glowed brightly in the harsh operating lights, displaying the master authentication prompt for Hartwell Global's corporate compliance vault.
At that exact moment, the heavy automatic doors of the surgical prep room slid open.
Mason Hartwell stood in the doorway.
He looked entirely unraveled. His tuxedo was gone, replaced by a rumpled dress shirt, his hair disheveled, his eyes wild and bloodshot as he stared across the room at Emily on the surgical table. Behind him stood two federal agents, their badges visible, blocking him from entering the sterile zone.
"Emily," Mason choked out, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and utter desperation as he took a step forward. "They... they arrested Camille. They froze all our accounts. The board is turning on me. You have to stop this."

Emily stared at her husband—the man who had built an empire on lies, who had traded her loyalty for corporate power, and who now stood broken at the very edge of ruin.
She lifted her trembling thumb, hovered it over the authentication sensor on the tablet screen, and looked straight into Mason's terrified eyes.
