Chapter 4 - The Descent

Adrenaline surged through Emily’s veins, overriding the heavy, aching fatigue in her lower back. She didn't look back at Mason. She shoved open the heavy fire-rated service door at the back of the kitchen, plunging into the dimly lit concrete stairwell that serviced the penthouse levels.

The heavy door slammed shut behind her, cutting off Mason’s frantic shouting.

Emily gripped the cold metal handrail, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she began descending the stairs. Thirty-five weeks pregnant with twins, descending forty-two flights of concrete stairs was an act of sheer physical torture, but stopping meant walking directly into whatever trap those men in the black SUVs had set.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

The sharp, rhythmic echo of hard-soled shoes reverberated from the landing several floors above her.

Someone was already in the stairwell.

"Mrs. Hartwell!" a deep, calm voice called out from above, bouncing off the concrete walls with chilling clarity. "There's nowhere to go! The service elevators are locked, and the ground-floor exit is secured. Just step back inside and let's talk!"

Emily’s stomach knotted. They hadn't come up the elevator; they had anticipated her escape route.

Panic threatened to overwhelm her, but survival instinct took over. She bypassed the thirty-ninth floor landing, ignoring the burning agony in her calves and lower back, and pushed downward toward the thirty-eighth floor. As she reached the landing, she threw her weight against the heavy fire door.

To her immense relief, it gave way.

She slipped into the carpeted hallway of the residential wing—a floor currently undergoing heavy interior renovations, meaning the units were unoccupied and the security cameras were temporarily disabled. The hallway smelled of fresh drywall, dust, and industrial paint.

Emily crept down the dim corridor, her hand pressed against her swollen stomach, whispering silent prayers to the twins to hold on just a little longer. She ducked into an open, unfinished suite, pressing her back against the bare drywall just as heavy footsteps reached the thirty-eighth-floor landing.

Through the gap in the doorway, she watched two men in tailored dark suits stride past the hallway. Their posture was rigid, their eyes scanning the doors with military precision. One of them wore an earpiece, murmuring softly into a concealed mic.

"Target is not on thirty-nine. Sweeping thirty-eight."

Emily held her breath, pressing her hand over her mouth to muffle the sound of her own respiration. If they searched this suite, she had nowhere to run.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the upper floors—followed by the unmistakable sound of breaking glass and a furious shout.

The two men in the hallway froze, exchanged a sharp glance, and instantly pivoted, breaking into a rapid sprint back toward the stairwell to investigate the commotion.

Emily didn't wait. She slipped out of the unfinished suite and headed toward the freight elevator bank at the end of the corridor, where a manual override key—left behind carelessly by a contractor—sat wedged in the utility lock box.
