Chapter 9 - The Perimeter Breach

The cold iron of the grate dug painfully into Emily's back as the operative pressed his forearm against her chest, cutting off her air.
"Give it up," the man hissed into her ear, his breath hot and rancid.
Emily clawed at his wrist, her vision blurring as oxygen starved her brain. Her hand brushed against her coat pocket. The plastic edge of the flash drive was right there. She could feel the weight of it, the tiny piece of digital evidence that represented every sacrifice she and Mason had made over eleven years—and the only weapon left to tear down Camille's corporate fortress.
From the darkness of the tunnel, Camille straightened up, brushing dust from her designer pantsuit, her face a mask of cold fury.
"Hold her still," Camille ordered, stepping close enough that Emily could smell her expensive perfume—a scent that had haunted the edges of Hartwell Global meetings for the past six months. Camille reached directly into Emily’s coat pocket, her fingers brushing against the lining.
Emily let out a ragged gasp, mustering every remaining ounce of strength, and bit down hard into the forearm pressing against her chest.
The man roared in pain, his grip slackening for a fraction of a second.
It was all the opening Emily needed. She drove her heel down onto his instep with a sickening thud, twisting away as he cursed and stumbled back.
CRASH.
Suddenly, the heavy iron access grate above them exploded inward with a deafening screech of snapping metal and shattered masonry. A blinding flood of halogen light poured down from the street level, accompanied by the chaotic roar of shouting voices and wailing sirens echoing down the concrete shaft.
"NYPD! Drop your weapons! Hands behind your head!" a commanding voice bellowed from above.
Camille’s head snapped up toward the light, color draining instantly from her face. "What is this?" she snarled, looking around wildly.
Before her operatives could react, two heavy tactical flashbangs dropped through the broken grate, detonating with blinding flashes of white light and deafening concussive booms that echoed like artillery fire through the narrow tunnel.
Emily slammed her eyes shut and threw her arms over her head, collapsing onto her side against the damp concrete as smoke billowed through the passage. Shouts, heavy boots hitting the floor, and the unmistakable sound of handcuffs clicking into place filled the confined space.
Through the ringing in her ears, a familiar, frantic voice cut through the chaos.
"Emily! Emily, where are you?!"
It was Marcus Vance, accompanied by two uniformed officers who rushed past the disoriented security operatives, sweeping the tunnel with tactical lights.
Marcus dropped to his knees beside her, his face pale with horror as he saw her curled against the damp bricks, clutching her abdomen.

"I'm here," Emily whispered, her voice trembling as a warm, terrifying wetness soaked through the fabric of her dress. She looked up at Marcus, her eyes wide with sudden, unfiltered dread. "Marcus... the babies. They're coming. Now."
