Chapter 3 - The Breaking Point

Emily didn’t flinch. She locked her gaze onto Mason’s fist, her heart hammering against her ribs, but her expression remained a mask of defiant stone. "Hit me," she whispered, her voice laced with lethal clarity. "Go ahead, Mason. Put your hands on your pregnant wife while your corporate lawyers watch the live audio feed through Marcus’s open line."

Mason froze. His fist hovered in the air for a fraction of a second before his fingers uncurled as if he had been burned. He snatched his hand back, breathing heavily, his eyes darting toward the open phone lying on the kitchen island.

"Vance," Mason shouted toward the speaker, his voice cracking with panic and fury. "If you think for one second—"

"Mr. Hartwell," Marcus Vance's calm, authoritative voice boomed through the speakerphone, cutting him off completely. "I advise you to step away from Mrs. Hartwell immediately. Every word you've spoken in the last five minutes has been recorded and backed up to an off-site, immutable cloud server. If anything happens to Emily or those children tonight, you won't just face corporate fraud charges; you'll face federal conspiracy and aggravated assault."

Mason stared at the phone as if it were a venomous snake. Slowly, he backed away from Emily, his chest heaving. The veneer of untouchable corporate invincibility had shattered entirely, leaving behind a desperate man standing in the ruins of his own making.

"You've destroyed everything," Mason snarled, pointing a trembling finger at Emily. "You think you're safe? You think Marcus Vance can protect you from what's coming? Hartwell Global isn't just a company, Emily. It's a machine backed by people who don't care about federal indictments. If those files go public, I'm not the only one who goes down. And the people tied to those shell companies don't negotiate."

"Then I suggest you start packing your own bags, Mason," Emily said coldly, reaching out with her free hand to grab her leather handbag off the counter. She slipped her passport and the flash drive containing the raw backups into her inner zip pocket. "Because my lawyer is filing for an emergency asset freeze and emergency custody injunction by sunrise."

Mason let out a dark, ragged laugh. "You think you're walking out of here? Look outside, Emily."

Confused, Emily glanced toward the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Down on the street below, two unmarked black SUVs had pulled up directly in front of the private lobby entrance of the building. Four men in dark suits stepped out, moving with an unnerving, synchronized precision that had nothing to do with corporate security and everything to do with something far more dangerous.

"They're not here for me," Mason whispered, a dark, manic smile touching the corners of his mouth. "They're here to clean up the mess. And they don't care about your divorce, Emily. Or your babies."

Emily’s blood ran cold. She grabbed her heavy roller suitcase by the handle, spun around, and bolted toward the private service exit at the back of the penthouse kitchen just as the sound of heavy boots echoed up the private elevator shaft.
