Chapter 5 - The Blind Drop

Emily’s fingers trembled as she jammed the contractor's key into the manual override slot of the freight elevator. With a mechanical groan of protesting gears, the heavy steel doors slid open, revealing a dim, grease-streaked cargo cabin that smelled of dust and old metal.

She dragged her heavy suitcase inside, punched the button for the sub-basement loading dock, and slammed the door shut just as the distant sound of running footsteps echoed back down the hall.

The freight car dropped with a stomach-churning jolt, descending past forty floors in a matter of seconds. Emily clutched the metal handrail, her vision blurring for a brief second as waves of exhaustion and nausea washed over her. The physical toll of the night was catching up with her, but she forced her eyes open, refusing to give in.

Ding.

The elevator jolted to a halt. The steel doors ground open, revealing the cavernous, dimly lit concrete expanse of the building's sub-basement loading dock. Rows of empty delivery trucks and oversized ventilation pipes stretched out into the shadows.

Emily stepped out into the damp chill of the subterranean garage, pulling her suitcase behind her. Her phone buzzed in her pocket—a silent text from Marcus Vance: Where are you? Police are en route to your location, but Mason's security team has blocked the main perimeter.

Before she could reply, the harsh beam of a high-intensity flashlight sliced through the darkness ten yards ahead of her.

"Found her," a harsh voice barked from behind the light.

Two figures stepped out from the shadows near the exit ramp, blocking the only clear path to the street. They weren't building security, and they weren't police. They walked with the cold, lethal certainty of professional fixers working for someone who had billions of dollars—and decades of criminal secrets—to protect.

Emily backed away, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird, her hand instinctively dropping into her coat pocket to grip the flash drive containing the truth that could destroy Mason Hartwell forever.

The men advanced slowly, closing off the exit, their faces obscured by the blinding glare of the flashlight.

"End of the line, Mrs. Hartwell," the lead man said, his voice echoing coldly off the concrete walls. "Hand over the drive, and we can make sure you and the kids get a comfortable ride out of the city."

Emily stared at them, her breath catching in her throat, knowing that the moment she handed over that drive, she and her children wouldn't just lose the case—they would disappear entirely.
