Chapter 2 - The Fracture

The metallic thud of the security lock disengaging echoed like a gunshot through the silent penthouse. Mason had used his override code.

The private elevator doors slid open, and Mason Hartwell stumbled into the foyer. His black tuxedo jacket was gone, his silk tie pulled loose and dangling from his collar, his white dress shirt crumpled at the cuffs. His hair, usually meticulously styled, fell across his forehead in damp strands. He looked less like the visionary billionaire who had graced the cover of Forbes an hour ago and more like a cornered animal.

His eyes swept the dim living room, locking instantly onto Emily standing near the kitchen island, flanked by her packed suitcases.

"Where do you think you're going?" Mason demanded, his voice thick with a dangerous cocktail of alcohol, adrenaline, and rage. He took three long strides toward her, stopping short of the counter. "Leaving my mother's party like a thief? Making a spectacle of us in front of every investor and reporter in the city?"

"I didn't make a spectacle, Mason," Emily said, her voice dropping into a register of icy calm that seemed to disorient him. "You did that all by yourself on the dance floor. I simply stopped watching."

Mason’s face darkened, a muscle twitching violently beneath his left eye. "That was business. Camille was briefing me on the European acquisition hurdles. You know how delicate those negotiations are—"

"Stop it," Emily interrupted, her tone sharp enough to cut glass. "Save the corporate excuses for your shareholders. We both saw what was happening. More importantly, you didn't race back here twenty-eight minutes after I left because your feelings were hurt. You came here because someone triggered an alarm on your terminal."

Mason’s expression flickered—a micro-expression of absolute panic that he masked almost instantly behind a sneer. "What are you talking about? You're delusional. The stress of the pregnancy is getting to you. You've been imagining things for months."

"Have I?" Emily stepped forward, her champagne-colored silk dress whispering against the floor. "Was I imagining the twenty million dollars transferred to an entity registered in the Cayman Islands last Tuesday? Was I imagining the forged compliance documents bearing my electronic signature?"

The air in the penthouse seemed to vanish.

Mason went entirely still. The frantic energy drained from his posture, replaced by a cold, calculating stillness that was infinitely more terrifying. The man she had loved for over a decade—the boy from Queens who used to share a single box of ramen with her—was completely gone. In his place stood a ruthless corporate predator who realized his entire empire was balanced on a knife-edge.

"You've been snooping," Mason whispered, his voice dropping to a low, venomous hiss. "After everything I built. After everything I gave you. You sat in this penthouse, living like a queen on my success, and you were digging through my files?"

"Your success?" Emily laughed, a short, humorless sound. "Mason, I wrote your first business plan on a napkin while you cried in our kitchen because a seed investor laughed you out of a coffee shop. I built this company beside you. And you used my identity to launder money to hide your impending corporate insolvency."

"Prove it," Mason challenged, taking another step closer, looming over her with menacing intensity. "Because as far as the federal authorities are concerned, those files were accessed tonight from your digital footprint. If anything happens to Hartwell Global, you're going down right beside me, Emily. Think about the babies. Do you want to give birth behind bars?"

Before Emily could answer, her phone—still connected to Marcus Vance in her pocket—buzzed violently with an incoming text message that lit up the fabric of her coat.

Mason’s eyes dropped to her pocket. Before she could move, his hand shot out, grabbing her wrist with a bruising grip and ripping the phone from her coat pocket. He glanced at the screen, and the color drained completely from his face.

The screen displayed a text from Marcus: We traced the secondary internal access point, Mason. It's coming from your private terminal at the office.

Mason stared at the screen, then slowly raised his eyes to meet Emily’s.

"You've been talking to Marcus," Mason whispered, his voice shaking with pure malice. "You didn't just look... you gave it to an attorney."

May you like

Mason raised his hand, his fingers curling into a fist, and for one terrifying second, Emily realized the man she had married was entirely capable of anything to protect his secrets.
