Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Cream-Colored Envelope

The silence in the marble corridor was absolute, stretching so tight that the hum of the crystal chandeliers overhead sounded like a low-frequency electric shock.

Richard Vale—my father, a titan of venture capital and a man who had built his empire on destroying rivals who made the mistake of underestimating him—did not raise his voice. He didn't need to. The sheer gravity of his presence made Grayson’s posture snap upright, the confident, entitled swagger of a man accustomed to getting his own way instantly evaporating into thin air.

“Richard,” Grayson repeated, his voice straining against the sudden dryness in his throat. He forced a stiff, nervous smile, though his eyes darted frantically around the corridor, registering the gathering crowd of elite guests peering out from the ballroom doors. “I wasn't aware you were flying in tonight. The private jet schedule said—”

“My schedule is not subject to your review, Grayson,” my father interrupted, his tone chillingly polite. He took another slow step forward, the cream-colored envelope clutched in his left hand like a death warrant.

My mother-in-law, Claudia, pushed her way past Grayson, her face flushed with panic as she realized the social catastrophe unfolding before her.

“Richard, please,” Claudia interjected, pasting on a brittle, frantic smile. “It’s a misunderstanding. A minor domestic upset. Evelyn is just... she’s emotional, you know how pregnancy hormones can be—”

“Do not speak about my daughter’s hormones, Claudia,” my father cut her off, his eyes finally shifting away from Grayson to look down at the deep crimson stain of Cabernet spreading across the pale champagne silk of my gown. A muscle feathered tightly along my father’s jaw. “And do not insult my intelligence by calling this a domestic upset.”

Vanessa Cole, realizing her position as arm candy was rapidly disintegrating, tried to slip backward toward the ballroom exit.

“Going somewhere, Ms. Cole?” my father asked softly, not even looking at her.

Vanessa froze, her manicured fingers digging into the strap of her glittering evening bag.

My father stopped three feet away from Grayson. He lifted the cream-colored envelope, tapping it lightly against his palm.

“You wanted the Series B funding for your real estate development firm, Grayson,” my father said, the sound carrying clearly to every guest watching from the doorway. “You begged me for it. You promised me that your personal life was stable, that your marriage to my daughter was built on a foundation of absolute mutual respect.”

Grayson swallowed hard, his face pale as death. “Richard, let’s go into the private study. We can discuss the terms—we don't need to air—”

May you like

“There is nothing to discuss,” my father replied. He slid his thumb under the flap of the cream envelope and ripped it open with a sharp, echoing tear. “The terms have changed. Permanently.”
