Chapter 10 - The Knock at the Penthouse

The midday sun beat down mercilessly against the glass facade of the Whitmore-Vale corporate tower downtown, but inside the sprawling, high-security penthouse office on the fiftieth floor, the atmosphere was a deep, freezing winter.
Grayson paced back and forth across the imported Persian rug, his phone pressed to his ear for the hundredth time, listening to the hollow, unending drone of an automated voicemail.
“Pick up, damn it, pick up,” Grayson muttered furiously, throwing his phone down onto the polished mahogany desk. It bounced off a stack of unopened legal notices and clattered onto the floor.
The office looked like a war zone. Empty bourbon glasses sat clustered on every flat surface, financial ledgers were torn open and scattered across the leather sofa, and the private wall safe behind his desk stood wide open and completely empty.
Every single line of credit was locked. Every offshore account showed a zero balance, frozen by federal auditors acting on the forensic ledger Marcus Vance had handed over at dawn.
He was bankrupt. He was exposed. And worst of all, he was entirely alone.
Suddenly, a loud, heavy knock echoed against the private elevator doors of the penthouse.
Grayson froze, his breath catching in his throat. For a wild, desperate second, he thought it might be his mother with good news, or perhaps a lawyer who had found a miracle loophole.
“Who is it?” Grayson called out, his voice cracking slightly as he walked cautiously toward the elevator foyer.
There was no answer.
Instead, the private elevator chime dinged softly, and the heavy metal doors slid open.
Standing in the entryway were not lawyers or business associates, but two federal marshals in dark tactical vests, flanked by a local police lieutenant holding a crisp, white manila envelope.
The lieutenant stepped forward, his eyes cold and devoid of any sympathy.
“Grayson Whitmore?” the officer asked, lifting the envelope.
Grayson took a slow step backward, his hands trembling at his sides. “There... there’s been some mistake. I’m a partner in—”
May you like
“You’re a fugitive from a federal asset seizure warrant, and you’re being served with a multi-count indictment for corporate fraud, wire embezzlement, and reckless endangerment,” the lieutenant interrupted, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
Before Grayson could scream, lunge, or reach for the panic button on his desk, the marshals stepped forward in unison, grabbed his arms with inescapable force, and slammed him hard against the mahogany wall, snapping the cold cuffs around his wrists.
