Chapter 6 - The Broken Doorway

“Sir, you cannot be in here!” the lead hospital security guard shouted, grabbing Grayson by the torn lapel of his ruined shirt and yanking him backward.
Grayson twisted violently out of the guard’s grip, his eyes wild and bloodshot as he stared past the medical cart directly at me. His chest heaved with ragged breaths, sweat matting his dark hair to his forehead. He looked less like the rising corporate titan who had sneered at me in the ballroom hours earlier and more like a cornered animal realizing the trap had finally slammed shut.
“Evelyn!” Grayson yelled, ignoring the nurse who stepped defensively between him and the delivery bed. “You can’t do this! You can’t cut me out of her life!”
My father didn't flinch. He didn't even raise his voice. He simply stepped around the foot of the bed, placing his tall frame directly between Grayson and the newborn resting against my chest.
“Get him out of my sight,” my father commanded, his tone chillingly low.
Two more security guards swarmed the doorway, clamping heavy hands onto Grayson’s arms and forcing him toward the corridor.
“Let go of me! I have rights!” Grayson shrieked, kicking his heels against the polished linoleum floor as they dragged him backward. He pointed a shaking finger at me over the guard’s shoulder. “She’s my daughter, Evelyn! You hear me? You can’t hide her from me! I’ll tear down every court in this state to take her!”
The heavy double doors swung shut, cutting off his desperate screams with a sharp, echoing thud.
The delivery room descended back into a tense, heavy silence, broken only by the soft, steady beep of the vital monitors and the gentle breathing of my newborn daughter.
I looked down at the tiny baby in my arms, my hands trembling slightly as the adrenaline rush began to fade, leaving a deep, exhausting ache in its wake.
“Are you alright, sweetheart?” my father asked, stepping back to my side and laying a warm, steady hand over my shoulder.
“I’m fine, Dad,” I whispered, swallowing the lump in my throat. I looked back down at the birth certificate clipboard resting on the rolling bedside tray. The blank line for Father’s Legal Name stared back up at me like an open wound.
Before I could pick up the pen, the attending obstetrician looked up from her charts, her face grim.
“Mr. Vale, Mrs. Whitmore—excuse me, Ms. Vale,” the doctor corrected herself quickly. “Given the severe acute stress and early labor induction, we need to move Evelyn to the recovery wing immediately. But there’s something else you need to know about the legal protocols for emergency guardianship filings in this state.”
My father’s eyes narrowed. “What about them?”
“If an estranged spouse initiates a paternity contest within forty-eight hours of birth under a contested emergency clause,” the doctor said quietly, “even with corporate disbarments pending, temporary visitation rights can sometimes be granted until a family court judge reviews the psychological evaluation.”

A cold chill ran straight down my spine. Grayson wasn't just screaming empty threats in the hallway; he was setting up the only legal weapon he had left.
