Chapter 5 - The First Cry

The delivery room became a whirlwind of efficient motion, bright lights, and raw, primal effort.
Every ounce of humiliation, betrayal, and pain I had endured under Grayson’s roof crystallized into pure, unadulterated strength. When the doctor told me to push, I poured every broken piece of the last two years into breaking through the wall of exhaustion, my hands gripping the metal side rails until my knuckles turned white.
My father stood by my head, wiping the sweat from my forehead with a cool damp cloth, whispering words of fierce encouragement that kept me anchored.
“Come on, Evelyn. She’s almost here. One more big push.”
I screamed, pushing past the burning agony, feeling the entire world narrow down to a single, explosive moment of release.
And then, cutting sharply through the frantic hum of the medical equipment, a high, clear, beautiful cry filled the room.
The tension in the delivery suite instantly dissolved into a wave of collective relief.
“She’s here!” the doctor announced, smiling broadly as she lifted a tiny, wriggling bundle wrapped in a warm blanket, covered in the quiet miracle of new life. “A healthy, beautiful baby girl.”
Tears spilled over my eyelashes, hot and uncontainable, as the nurse quickly cleaned her and placed her directly onto my chest.
She was tiny, her skin pink and perfect, her dark hair a soft fuzz against her head. As I pulled her close, wrapping my arms around her warm, fragile body, she let out a soft snuffle and quieted down instantly, as if she knew she was finally safe.
“Look at her, Dad,” I choked out, a watery laugh escaping my lips as I looked up at my father.
My father was blinking rapidly, staring down at his new granddaughter with an expression of pure, unfiltered wonder that I hadn't seen on his face since I was a little girl. He reached out with a trembling finger, gently touching the baby’s tiny cheek.
“She looks just like you, sweetheart,” my father whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “Strong. Beautiful. Unstoppable.”
I kissed the top of my daughter’s head, my heart swelling with a fierce, protective love that consumed every lingering shadow of the past.
The nurse handed me a clipboard for the birth certificate and medical registration forms, pointing to the line marked Father’s Legal Name.
I looked down at the blank line, then up at my father, a cool, decisive resolve settling over my mind.

Before I could pick up the pen to write, the heavy delivery suite door flew open with a violent crash.
Grayson stood in the doorway, disheveled, his tuxedo jacket missing, his shirt collar torn, panting heavily with wild, desperate eyes as security guards swarmed behind him in hot pursuit.
