Chapter 8 - The Unexpected Ally

The silence in the recovery room snapped tight.

My father didn't lower his guard, his eyes narrowing as he stared down the opposing counsel. “Explain yourself, Mr. Vance. Grayson bragged to his associates less than an hour ago that you were his new legal shield.”

Marcus Vance offered a thin, humorless smile, sliding his hands smoothly into the pockets of his overcoat.

“Grayson is accustomed to people believing whatever he pays them to believe,” Marcus said, taking two slow steps into the room. His gaze drifted past my father, locking onto me and the tiny bundle resting against my chest. “He called me at three in the morning, weeping into his phone about a frozen trust fund and a recording he couldn't delete. He offered me a retainer three times my standard rate to file an emergency custody injunction against you, Ms. Vale.”

“And you took it?” I asked, my voice tightening with protective fury as I pulled my baby closer.

“I listened to his entire pitch,” Marcus replied evenly. “And then I asked him one simple question: Did you or did you not intentionally drive a vehicle at your pregnant wife, and did you record your affair in Room 1807 of the Halston Hotel?”

My father’s eyebrows lifted in mild surprise. “And what did he say?”

“He stopped talking,” Marcus said, a cold glint appearing in his eyes. “Which told me everything I needed to know. I didn't take his retainer, Mr. Vale. I took his case file, walked over to my office, and spent the last two hours reviewing the preliminary asset forfeiture filings your firm submitted against his development company.”

Marcus reached into his leather folder, pulled out a single heavy document, and laid it neatly on the rolling bedside tray.

“What is this?” I asked, looking down at the bold black header.

“That,” Marcus said, “is a notarized waiver of representation and a formal counter-petition. My firm represents a coalition of minority investors whom Grayson defrauded over the past eighteen months to fund his lavish lifestyle and his secret apartment at the Halston.”

Marcus looked directly into my eyes, his expression softening just a fraction, revealing a quiet, profound empathy.

“Grayson thinks this is a messy divorce and a custody battle,” Marcus said quietly. “He doesn't realize that the moment he laid a hand on you, he signed his own federal indictment. I’m not here to represent him, Ms. Vale. I’m here to help you bury him.”
