Chapter 9 - The House of Cards

The morning sun fully cleared the horizon, casting a sharp, brilliant light across the hospital room, illuminating the pages of the documents Marcus Vance had laid out before us.

My father skimmed through the legal brief, his eyes darting across the lines of financial forensic data with the speed of a seasoned predator. Slowly, a wide, satisfied grin spread across his face.

“Well, I’ll be damned,” my father murmured, looking up at Marcus with newfound respect. “You didn't just find his corporate weak spots; you found the master ledger of his offshore shell companies.”

“Grayson was arrogant, not careful,” Marcus explained, resting his hands on the back of a visitor’s chair. “He assumed that because he married into the Vale family, his financial crimes would be absorbed or quietly bailed out if things went south. He didn't account for the fact that his wife would be the one holding the smoking gun.”

I looked down at my sleeping daughter, a profound weight lifting off my chest for the first time since the night began. “Will this be enough to strip him of any parental rights?”

“Completely,” Marcus said without a moment of hesitation. “Between the digital audio recording of his infidelity and threats, the forensic proof of corporate fraud, and the emergency restraining order we’re filing based on his violent conduct at the gala, Grayson won't even be allowed within five hundred feet of a school district, let alone a family court custody hearing.”

Before my father could answer, the door to the recovery suite swung open again, much less politely this time.

Claudia Whitmore marched into the room, her designer coat disheveled, her face streaked with old tears and furious indignation. Behind her trailed two private security guards looking apologetic.

“Evelyn! You listen to me right now—” Claudia began shrilly, marching straight toward the bed before she froze, noticing Marcus Vance standing by the window. She blinked, her expression shifting from panic to desperate confusion. “Marcus? What are you doing here? Why aren't you at the courthouse filing Grayson’s injunction?”

Marcus turned slowly to face her, his expression an absolute mask of professional indifference.

“Good morning, Claudia,” Marcus said smoothly. “I’m afraid your son neglected to mention a few critical details when he retained my services.”

“What are you talking about?” Claudia demanded, her voice rising in pitch. “He’s your nephew! Your own flesh and blood!”

Marcus’s eyes darkened. “Grayson stopped being my nephew the day he and your husband helped bury my father’s legacy twenty years ago. And today, he stops being a free man.”

Claudia gasped, stumbling backward until her back hit the doorframe. “You’re... you’re turning on him? You’re helping her?”

May you like

“I’m helping justice,” Marcus replied coldly.
