Chapter 15 - The Boardroom Coup

At precisely 7:58 a.m., the heavy mahogany doors of the Sterling & Co. executive boardroom swung open.

The twelve members of the board of directors were already seated around the massive conference table, whispering anxiously among themselves. Rumors of Arthur’s arrest had spread through the financial district like wildfire, crashing Sterling stock by thirty-two percent in pre-market trading.

When Elena Vance walked into the room, the whispering stopped instantly.

She wore a sharp, midnight-blue tailored pantsuit, her silver-streaked blonde hair pulled back into a sleek, professional bun. There was no bandage visible on her shoulder, no trace of the poisoned, gaslit wife who had been trapped in her own home three days ago. She walked with the absolute, unyielding authority of an apex predator taking control of her territory.

Uncle Thomas followed two steps behind, carrying a leather briefcase, while Marcus stood quietly just outside the threshold, blocking the doorway like a stone statue.

“Good morning, directors,” Elena said, her voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room. She walked straight to the head of the table—the seat traditionally reserved for the CEO and patriarch—and pulled out the chair.

Julian Vance—Arthur’s cousin and the longest-serving member of the board—scowled, standing up abruptly.

“Hold on right there, Elena,” Julian barked, his face flushing red with indignation. “This is an emergency executive session. You have no voting seat on this board, no corporate title, and no legal standing to stand at the head of this table. Security! Escort her out immediately!”

None of the security guards outside moved.

Uncle Thomas calmly unzipped his briefcase, pulled out a thick document stamped with the official seal of the New York State Supreme Court, and laid it flat on the mahogany table right in front of Julian’s face.

“You might want to check the court stamp, Julian,” Uncle Thomas said smoothly. “Under the emergency reversion provisions of the Vance Family Trust, ratified at midnight by federal magistrate Judge Harrison, Elena Vance holds fifty-one point four percent of the voting shares of Sterling & Co. Real Estate.”

Julian stared at the document, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He looked around the table for support, but the other eleven directors were staring straight down at their notepads, terrified to make eye contact.

“That... that’s impossible,” Julian stammered, gripping the edge of the table. “Arthur never filed those transfers! The bylaws state—”

“The bylaws were written by men who thought they could bury a woman in her own home and steal her inheritance,” Elena interrupted, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp command that silenced the room completely.

She placed both hands flat on the table and leaned forward, her green eyes burning into Julian’s soul.

“Meeting called to order,” Elena announced clearly. “Item number one on the agenda: the immediate termination of Julian Vance, Lawrence Vance, and every executive officer who participated in corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and asset concealment.”

Julian staggered backward, collapsing into his chair as the reality of the takeover finally crushed him.
