Chapter 19 - The Final Witness

Dr. Nathan Cole looked older, his hair dusted with gray, his eyes hollow and haunted by months of hiding in the darkest corners of the medical complex.
“You shouldn’t have come down here alone, Elena,” Nathan said quietly, holding his hands up to show he was unarmed. “Arthur’s network isn't entirely gone. There are men still loyal to the old guard who don't care about federal indictments or corporate reorganizations.”
Elena stood up slowly from the metal table, letting the heavy medical binder drop with a dull thud. She didn't look scared. She looked like a judge preparing to deliver a death sentence.
“You signed the autopsy report, Nathan,” Elena said, her voice cutting through the damp air like a razor. “You helped Arthur cover up my father’s murder. You stood beside my bed three days ago and watched nurses hand me poisoned tea without saying a word.”
Nathan flinched, taking a hesitant step backward into the light of the overhead fixture. He swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly.
“I didn't have a choice,” Nathan whispered, his voice cracking with panic. “Arthur held my medical license, my research grants, and my family’s safety in his hands. The moment I tried to back out after your father’s death, Arthur made it clear what happens to doctors who lose their memory.”
“And now Arthur is sitting in a federal maximum-security cell awaiting trial,” Elena stepped forward, her green eyes locked onto his terrified face. “Which means you don’t have to protect him anymore. You have exactly one choice, Nathan: walk out of this hospital with me right now, hand that voice recorder to the U.S. Attorney, and testify to everything you know—or stay here and take the fall for a murder you helped orchestrate.”
Nathan stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. He looked down at the digital voice recorder in his hand, then back up at the cold, unyielding fire in Elena’s eyes.
Slowly, deliberately, Nathan extended his hand and placed the recorder on the metal examination table.
“Every meeting, every financial bribe, every prescription record,” Nathan said hoarsely. “It’s all on this device. I kept it as my insurance policy against Arthur. Now... it’s yours.”
Before Elena could reach for the recorder, the emergency fire door at the end of the hall slammed open with a deafening crash.
Heavy tactical boots thudded against the concrete floor.

“Ambush!” Marcus’s voice roared from down the corridor, followed instantly by the sharp, concussive crack of a suppressed firearm.
