Chapter 18 - The Medical Examiner’s Secret

The private archives of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital were housed in the sub-basement—a damp, labyrinthine vault of steel filing cabinets and dusty medical records that smelled of old paper and formaldehyde.
At 11:45 p.m., the heavy fire door clicked open.
Elena walked down the dimly lit aisle, holding a high-powered tactical flashlight. Behind her, Marcus held the perimeter, his weapon holstered but his senses razor-sharp. Uncle Thomas had stayed upstairs coordinating with the federal prosecutors, but Elena knew she couldn't wait for morning.
The note had changed everything.
For three years, she had believed her father’s death was a tragic heart attack brought on by natural stress. Arthur had wept at the funeral, holding her hand while reciting comforting lies about his beloved business partner.
She stopped in front of aisle 4-B, scanning the metal labels until her finger landed on a dusty green binder: October 2021 - Autopsy Records & Coroner Reports.
She pulled the binder out, setting it down on a metal examination table beneath the flickering fluorescent overhead light.
Her gloved fingers flipped open the heavy cover, turning past page after page of clinical jargon, toxicology screenings, and pathologist signatures until she reached the final report of Henry Vance.
Her eyes scanned down the page, stopping dead at the toxicology addendum—a page that had clearly been sealed with a federal classification sticker, but whose seal had been cleanly sliced open with a razor blade.
> Cause of death: Cardiac arrest induced by acute digitalis poisoning.
> Pathologist on record: Dr. Marcus Vance (deceased).
> Witnessing physician of record: Dr. Arthur Sterling.
Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. The room seemed to tilt on its axis.
It wasn't a natural heart attack. Her father had been murdered—poisoned with digitalis, the exact same slow-acting toxin Arthur had tried to feed her in her morning tea. They hadn't just stolen her estate; they had murdered her father to fast-track the corporate takeover.
“Found what you were looking for?” a calm, deep voice echoed from the end of the dark aisle.
Elena snapped her head up.
Stepping out from the shadows near the corner of the vault was a man in a dark trench coat, holding a small digital voice recorder in his hand. He wasn't Julian Jr., and he wasn't Victor Thorne.
May you like
It was Dr. Nathan Cole—former chief of surgery at St. Jude’s and Arthur Sterling’s closest medical accomplice.
