Chapter 17 - The Shadows of the Past

The rain began to fall just as dusk settled over the city, streaking the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Vance Global penthouse with long, shimmering lines of water.

Elena sat at her walnut executive desk, reviewing the final asset seizure reports sent over by Sarah Lin. Every subsidiary, every overseas account, every hidden property deed had been successfully transferred into her name. The Sterling name was officially erased from the commercial registry, replaced entirely by the rising corporate titan of Vance Global.

The private elevator chime sounded softly down the hall.

Elena didn't look up from her tablet. “Uncle Tom, I told you I don’t need any more coffee tonight.”

The heavy footsteps that approached weren't Uncle Tom’s heavy, deliberate stride. They were lighter, sharper, carrying the unmistakable cadence of someone trained in tactical movement.

Marcus stepped into the office, holding a sealed, heavy-stock manila envelope bearing no return address and no digital barcode.

“You have a delivery, Mrs. Sterling,” Marcus said, placing the envelope gently on the edge of the desk.

Elena finally looked up from her tablet, her green eyes narrowing slightly as she stared at the plain paper. “Delivery? How did it get past building security? The lobby is locked down by federal marshals and Gallo operatives.”

“It didn't come through the lobby,” Marcus replied, his voice dropping into a low, professional warning. “A courier dropped it off at the loading dock three minutes ago. The security cameras captured a man in a delivery uniform leaving a bicycle near the alley. When our tech team ran facial recognition on the footage, the system flagged a match.”

Elena’s gaze flicked up to his face. “Who?”

“Ethan’s younger brother—Julian Jr.,” Marcus said quietly. “He skipped town right before the federal indictments dropped. We thought he was hiding out in New Jersey.”

Elena reached out, her fingers sliding beneath the flap of the envelope. She pulled out a single, heavy sheet of embossed stationery and an old, faded photograph.

The photograph showed a younger Elena standing beside her father outside their family estate on the day of her wedding—long before Arthur Sterling had poisoned her tea, long before the gaslighting began, and long before her father had suffered his ‘accidental’ fatal stroke in his study.

On the back of the photograph, written in messy, frantic handwriting, were three lines:

> “Arthur didn’t kill your father alone. Check the medical examiner's report from October 12, 2021. The game isn’t over, Elena. Welcome to the real trap.”

Elena stared at the words, the blood draining from her face for a single, fleeting second before a cold, blinding fury ignited deep within her chest.
