Chapter 20 - The Sovereign Empire

The gunfire echoed down the sterile white corridors of the basement archives like rolling thunder.

Elena didn't hesitate. Her hand snatched the digital voice recorder off the metal table and shoved it deep into her coat pocket.

“Get down, Nathan!” Elena ordered, grabbing the terrified doctor by the shoulder and shoving him behind a heavy steel filing cabinet as a volley of bullets sparked against the concrete wall above them.

From down the hallway, Marcus’s tactical carbine fired in rapid, disciplined bursts—three crisp pops that ended with the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor.

“Clear!” Marcus shouted back, his voice steady as iron.

Elena stepped out from behind the filing cabinet, her coat swirling around her ankles. Rounding the corner, she saw two men in unmarked tactical gear sprawled unconscious on the floor, neutralized with surgical precision by Marcus and two Gallo operatives who had slipped through the service elevator unnoticed.

“Looks like Arthur had a few insurance policies left outside the federal pen,” Marcus said coolly, lowering his weapon and checking his magazine. “Are you alright, Mrs. Sterling?”

“I’m better than alright,” Elena replied, pulling the digital voice recorder from her pocket and holding it up to the light. “We just found the missing link. The murder charge that will keep Arthur behind bars for the rest of his natural life.”

An hour later, the sun began to peek over the jagged skyline of the downtown financial district, painting the glass towers of Vance Global in a brilliant sweep of gold and crimson.

Elena stood once again on the balcony of her penthouse suite, looking down at the bustling city below. The federal marshals had already collected the voice recorder from her hands at 4:00 a.m. By the time the stock market opened at 9:00 a.m., the final indictments for first-degree murder would be unsealed against Arthur Sterling and his remaining co-conspirators.

Her burner phone buzzed softly on the glass table behind her.

She walked back inside, picked up the phone, and looked at the screen. It was a single, clean text message from an unknown number:

> "The kitchen is completely clean, Elena. If you ever need an empire built or an old house swept, you know who to call."

May you like

Elena smiled—a warm, genuine, unforced smile that reached all the way to her eyes. She slipped the phone into her pocket, turned toward the double doors where Uncle Thomas and Marcus were waiting respectfully, and gave a single, decisive nod.

“Come on,” Elena said, her voice ringing clear and triumphant across the grand office. “Let’s go open the market.”
