Chapter 2 - The Cornerstone of the Sky

A strange, uneasy silence rippled across the room. Nathan let out a short, forced laugh, though the confident veneer around his eyes was beginning to crack at the edges.
"What are you talking about?" Nathan demanded, his voice rising in pitch. "CloudAxis occupies the top four floors of the Apex Tower on Grand Avenue. We pay two million dollars a year in rent. We own our space in spirit, and our corporate headquarters are listed on every financial prospectus we’re handing out to investors today."
Arthur didn't smile. He reached back into his frayed tweed coat and pulled out a thick, leather-bound portfolio secured with a silver clasp. He didn't open it yet; he simply rested his palm on top of it.
"Apex Tower was built thirty years ago by Vance Holdings," Arthur said quietly, every word dropping like a lead weight onto the glass table. "My grandfather laid the cornerstone. When the real estate market crashed in ninety-eight, my family bought the entire block. Every square inch of concrete, every fiber-optic line running through the floorboards, and every single lease agreement bearing a corporate stamp."
Madison leaned forward, her face turning pale beneath her expensive makeup. "That's... that's impossible. Apex Tower is owned by a blind institutional trust managed by Vanguard Global. Everyone in the valley knows that."
"Vanguard Global is a subsidiary management firm," Arthur replied, his voice chillingly level. "Which reports directly to Vance Holdings. Vance Holdings is privately held. And I am the sole surviving trustee and majority shareholder."
Nathan stood up so fast his executive chair rolled backward and crashed into the walnut wall paneling. His chest heaved, his face draining of color as he stared at the old man in the faded tweed jacket.
"No," Nathan whispered, shaking his head frantically. "No, that's a lie. You're... you're a mobile notary service from the county registry. I pulled your credentials myself when my administrative assistant booked you through the registry pool!"
"Your administrative assistant booked a blind registry request," Arthur corrected smoothly. "And my firm’s compliance department automatically assigned me to this specific file because our legal team flagged a suspicious corporate restructuring involving CloudAxis three weeks ago."
Arthur finally looked at me, a faint, proud warmth softening his aged features.

"Emma Vance," Arthur said, his voice ringing clearly across the room. "My only granddaughter."
