Chapter 8 - The Audit Trail

"Mr. Nathan Pierce?" the lead officer asked, stepping into the conference room and holding up a formal legal notice.
Nathan froze, his eyes darting from the officer to the document. "I'm... I'm Nathan Pierce. What is this?"
"You're being served with a court-ordered asset freeze and a forensic financial audit regarding suspected misappropriation of corporate developmental funds," the officer stated clearly. "Issued by the state attorney general's office upon motion of Vance Holdings' legal counsel."
Madison let out a sharp gasp, stumbling backward against the glass wall. "Misappropriation?! That's absurd! CloudAxis is fully compliant!"
"Is it?" Liam asked smoothly, pulling a second file from his tablet and sliding it across the table toward them. "Our internal compliance team flagged several irregular offshore wire transfers routed through personal accounts last week—funds intended for CloudAxis infrastructure development that mysteriously landed in a private holding account registered under Madison Sterling's name."
Nathan whipped his head around to stare at Madison, his face turning an ash-gray color. "Madison... what is he talking about? What offshore transfers?"
Madison crossed her arms defensively, her eyes darting away. "It was just a tax-shelter contingency! Everyone in tech does it to protect operating margins!"
"Not with venture capital funds backed by institutional trusts that belong to Vance Holdings," Arthur said, his voice dropping like an anvil. "That isn't a tax shelter, Ms. Sterling. That is wire fraud."
The silence in the room became absolute. The fifty-million-dollar IPO presentation scheduled for two o'clock wasn't just delayed; it was completely dead. The investors weren't coming. The servers weren't coming back online. And the empire Nathan had spent years building on a foundation of arrogance and deceit was unraveling before his eyes in real time.
Nathan slumped back against the edge of the conference table, his hands trembling as he stared at the floor. The charismatic, untouchable tech CEO was gone, replaced by a desperate man who finally realized that his entire existence had been propped up by the very person he had tried to throw away.
"Emma," Nathan muttered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the emergency lights. "Please... just talk to them. Tell them to call off the audit. I'll sign whatever you want. I'll give you everything."
I looked down at the black credit card still resting untouched on the center of the table.
May you like
"Keep the card, Nathan," I repeated softly. "You're going to need it for your legal fees."
