Chapter 9 - The Meeting Behind Closed Doors

By 4:30 PM, the chaos on the third floor had quieted down into a tense, controlled evacuation. Building security had escorted Madison and Nathan out of the executive suite through a service freight elevator, keeping them away from the financial journalists already gathering in the main lobby downstairs.

I sat in my grandfather’s private office on the penthouse floor of Apex Tower.

The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the Phoenix skyline, painted in the warm, golden hues of the late Arizona afternoon. A crystal cup of green tea sat on the polished walnut desk before me, undisturbed.

Liam stood by the window, checking his tablet notifications. "The state attorney’s office has officially impounded CloudAxis's primary financial servers. The board of directors is already drafting an emergency resolution to strip Nathan of his CEO title by tomorrow morning."

"Let them," I said quietly, stirring my tea with a silver spoon. "Nathan thought he was buying a company when he married into our family line. He forgot that the real value of a business isn't the code on the screen—it's the integrity of the people standing behind it."

Arthur sat in the leather armchair across from me, watching me with a warm, approving gaze. "You handled that with remarkable restraint, Emma. Many people in your position would have let anger cloud their judgment."

"Anger is a waste of capital, Grandpa," I replied with a faint smile. "Precision is much more effective."

Before my grandfather could reply, a soft chime echoed from the intercom on the desk.

"Ms. Vance?" my executive assistant’s voice came through the speaker, sounding slightly hesitant. "There's someone downstairs in the private lobby asking to speak with you. He says it's urgent regarding the liquidation assets of CloudAxis."

I raised an eyebrow. "Who is it?"

"It's Marcus Vance—no relation to the family," the assistant clarified quickly. "He's a private restructuring trustee representing an anonymous institutional investor who wants to buy out CloudAxis's remaining IP rights before the bankruptcy auction tomorrow."

Liam frowned, turning away from the window. "An anonymous buyer trying to snap up the tech assets before the dust even settles? That sounds like a vulture fund."

"Let's find out," I said, standing up and smoothing down the front of my cardigan. "Send him up to the private conference room."
