Chapter 6 - The Digital Blackout

The red fluorescent status lights on the primary network switches in the sub-basement server vaults flickered once, turned amber, and then died completely.

Down on the third-floor conference suite, Nathan’s panicked text message had barely finished delivering to my phone when the digital pulse of CloudAxis flatlined. Across four floors of glass-walled offices, executive monitors froze mid-render. The glowing visual presentations detailing fifty-million-dollar valuation projections disintegrated into generic error screens.

Inside the boardroom, the doors flew open.

Liam Vance—my cousin and the chief technology officer of Vance Holdings—stepped into the hallway with a heavy tablet tucked under his arm, his expression as cold and sharp as tempered steel.

"System isolation complete," Liam said loudly enough for everyone inside the conference room to hear. "All regional trunk routing has been diverted to internal diagnostics. CloudAxis is entirely offline."

Nathan stumbled out into the hallway, his designer suit jacket hanging open, his face slick with nervous sweat. He looked like a man who had just watched his entire empire dissolve into vapor.

"Liam!" Nathan gasped, his voice cracking as he lunged forward, grabbing my cousin by the lapel. "What are you doing?! Are you out of your mind?! That server rack hosts our live equity pipeline for the investor board meeting in less than two hours!"

Liam didn't flinch. He slowly looked down at Nathan’s hand gripping his jacket, then raised his eyes to meet Nathan's panicked gaze with absolute contempt.

"Remove your hands from my clothing, Mr. Pierce," Liam said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp register. "And you might want to check your lease agreement clause sixteen-B regarding unauthorized commercial sub-tenant risk mitigation. You're violating building safety compliance."

Madison rushed out behind him, her phone pressed frantically to her ear, her face twisted in utter disbelief. "Nathan, it's Vanguard Global! The lead institutional investors just pulled out of the wire transfer! They say our data feeds are compromised and they’re auditing our infrastructure immediately!"

Nathan turned back toward the conference room, where the landline speakerphone was blaring a harsh, automated disconnection tone.

"No," Nathan whispered, shaking his head as the gravity of his situation finally crushed down on him. "No, this can't be happening. We had an agreement..."

"You had a month-to-month lease extension and a wife you chose to discard," a deep, authoritative voice echoed from the end of the hallway.

Grandpa Arthur stepped out of the private elevator, his walking cane striking the marble floor with a rhythmic, unhurried cadence that signaled the closing of a trap.
