Chapter 3 - The Coffee Shop Illusion

The name hung in the air like a physical shockwave.

Vance.

Nathan’s knees seemed to buckle slightly. He caught himself against the edge of the mahogany table, his knuckles turning white as he stared back and forth between the old man and me.

"Vance...?" Nathan choked out, the word tasting like poison on his tongue. "No. No, that's impossible. When I met you—when you were working at that café on Maple Street—you said your name was Emma. Just Emma!"

I slowly stood up from my chair. I didn't rush. I smoothed down the front of my cream-colored cardigan—the one Madison had mocked just minutes earlier—and picked up my small leather handbag.

"You never asked for my last name, Nathan," I said, my voice quiet, completely devoid of the hurt or anger he had expected to see. "When you walked into that coffee shop six years ago, fresh out of business school with a half-baked algorithm and no capital, you were sweating through your cheap polyester suit. You sat at my table, complained about investors rejecting your pitch, and talked for forty minutes straight without taking a breath."

Nathan stared at me, his eyes wide, memories violently rewriting themselves in his mind.

"You... you listened," he whispered. "You helped me rewrite the financial projections on a paper napkin."

"I did," I nodded. "Because I wanted to see if the man who claimed he wanted to change the tech world actually had an original thought in his head, or if he was just another loud voice looking for a shortcut. You had the algorithm, but you didn't have a landlord willing to take a chance on a zero-revenue startup."

I took a slow step forward, closing the distance between us.

"So I called my grandfather," I continued smoothly. "And I had him sign off on a below-market commercial lease for a tiny, drafty room on the third floor of Apex Tower. I gave CloudAxis its first home. I gave you your start."

Madison shook her head violently, standing up beside Nathan, her voice shrill with rising panic. "Nathan, don't listen to her! This is a scam! They’re making it up! Even if her family owns some old building, CloudAxis is a public-bound entity now! We have venture capital backing, we have an IPO scheduled for this afternoon, and a bunch of old family real estate doesn't give them the right to—"

"It gives us the right to evict," Arthur interrupted, finally opening his leather portfolio and pulling out a single, heavily stamped legal document.

He slid it across the table toward Nathan.
