Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Leverage

Emma's small, sleepy voice echoed down the hallway like a gunshot.
Richard's eyes flicked past my shoulder toward the dark interior of the house, a slow, ugly smile spreading across his face. He shifted his weight, his posture changing from corporate representative to something far more dangerous.
"Ah," Richard murmured, his voice dripping with venomous satisfaction. "The little girl. You know, Sergeant, court battles over fraudulent deeds can take months. Years, even. But custody disputes involving an absent military mother and a 'destitute' father who claims his wife abandoned the home? Those tend to get resolved a lot faster when the right paperwork is submitted to family court."
My vision blurred red. The cold, calculated discipline I had maintained through every deployment, every betrayal, and every fraudulent bank statement fractured into a blinding rage.
I didn't reach for my sidearm. I didn't shout.
With a speed born of years of close-quarters combat training, I lunged forward before Richard could react, grabbing the lapels of his expensive designer suit and yanking him across the threshold right into the entryway.
He stumbled hard, his silver briefcase slipping from his fingers and clattering loudly against the hardwood floor.
I slammed him back against the interior wall with enough force to rattle the framed pictures hanging in the hall. My forearm pressed firmly across his throat, pinning him in place as I leaned in close, my face inches from his.
"If you ever," I whispered, my voice trembling with a lethal fury that made the air in the room feel like ice, "mention my daughter again... if you even so much as look down that hallway... I will forget I am wearing civilian clothes, and I will show you what a combat-trained soldier does to someone who threatens her family."
Richard choked for air, his face turning pale as he clawed futilely at my forearm. For all his corporate intimidation and slick threats, he was nothing more than a coward when faced with real, unyielding force.
"You... you can't touch me," he gasped out, his eyes bulging in terror. "The... the police... the deed..."
"The deed is a forgery, and your little corporate shell company is currently being audited by federal investigators," I snarled, pressing my forearm harder against his windpipe until his heels lifted slightly off the floor. "And you? You're trespassing, committing extortion, and aiding financial fraud across state lines. That's a federal penitentiary offense, Richard. How do you think you'll look in an orange jumpsuit?"
Down the hall, the soft patter of tiny footsteps approached.
"Mommy?" Emma's voice called out again, closer this time, accompanied by the gentle rustle of her fleece blanket.
I didn't let go of Richard, but I turned my head slightly toward the hallway, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Stay in your room, baby! Mommy's taking care of something!"
"Okay, Mommy," Emma mumbled sleepily, her footsteps pausing before turning back down the hall toward her bed.
I looked back down at Richard, whose eyes were wide with sheer panic. I slowly eased the pressure on his throat, letting him drop back down onto his heels as he gasped for air, coughing violently and clutching his bruised neck.
"Get out of my house," I whispered, my voice dangerously quiet. "And tell Daniel and Olivia that if they ever send another errand boy to my door, I won't just freeze their bank accounts. I'll hunt them down myself."
Richard stumbled backward out the open front door, scrambling to grab his dropped briefcase from the floor. He didn't say another word. He turned, sprinted down the driveway, and threw himself into the black sedan, which peeled rubber down the dark street and vanished into the night.
I slammed the front door shut, locked the deadbolt, and threw the heavy safety chain into place.
Elena was standing by the kitchen island, staring at me with a mixture of absolute awe and utter terror. "Sarah... what are we going to do? They won't stop. If they have a forged deed, they'll come back with the police, or worse."
I turned around, breathing heavily, my mind racing through every possible tactical counter-move. We had won this round, but the war had only just begun. Daniel and his family had thought they could destroy me while I was away serving my country. They didn't realize that an Army mom doesn't just defend her home—she obliterates anything that threatens her child.
"They won't be coming back with police," I said, walking over to my laptop and picking it up from the table. "Because tonight, we're going to hand the federal prosecutor every single document, every forged signature, and every offshore account number they need to put Daniel, Olivia, and Richard behind bars for the rest of their lives."

I opened the screen, the green terminal code still blinking softly in the dark.
"And tomorrow," I added, looking up at Elena with a cold, absolute resolve, "we're going to take back everything they stole."
