Chapter 4 - The Hidden Ledger

It took them less than fifteen minutes to pack their things.

Emily slammed her designer suitcases into the trunk of her boyfriend's BMW with enough force to scratch the paint. Olivia marched out the front door without a single backward glance, her nose high in the air, muttering threats about lawyers and lawsuits that I didn't care about. Daniel was the last to leave. He lingered in the doorway for a long moment, looking at me with a pathetic mix of anger and desperation.

"You're making a massive mistake, Sarah," he muttered, adjusting the collar of his jacket. "You can't raise Emma alone. You'll see."

"I raised her while you were spending my money," I said quietly. "Closing the door on you isn't a mistake. It's an upgrade."

I shut the heavy front door, locked the deadbolt, and threw the chain into place. The finality of the sound echoed through the quiet house.

The heavy scent of seafood and melted butter still lingered in the dining room, a sickening reminder of the betrayal that had been taking place under my roof. But for the first time in three years, the house felt peaceful. It felt clean.

I turned around to find Emma sitting on the living room rug, wrapped in a warm fleece blanket I had pulled from the hall closet. She was holding her favorite stuffed rabbit, looking up at me with large, solemn eyes.

"Mommy?" she whispered.

I dropped to my knees in front of her, gently brushing a stray curl from her forehead. "I'm right here, sweet girl. I'm not going anywhere."

"Are the loud people gone?"

"They're gone, baby," I said, my voice softening as I fought back a fresh wave of tears. "They're never coming back."

Emma let out a tiny sigh of relief, leaning forward to rest her forehead against mine. "I missed you so much."

"I missed you more than you'll ever know," I whispered, kissing the top of her head.

After I got Emma fed a warm bowl of soup and tucked safely into her own bed with the nightlight glowing softly against the wall, I walked back out to the living room. The silence of the house was profound. I picked up my laptop from the coffee table, opened it back up, and began the grueling process of auditing every single financial statement from the past three years.

I needed to know the full extent of the damage.

I expected to find reckless spending, vacations, and expensive dinners. What I didn't expect to find was a series of hidden accounts that Daniel had opened using my power of attorney—accounts I had never authorized, funneling thousands of dollars every month into an unknown entity.

My fingers flew across the keyboard, tracing the digital breadcrumbs. The trail led away from our personal expenses and straight toward a corporate entity registered in a state I had never even visited.

The name of the company on the registration documents made my blood run instantly cold.

Mitchell & Associates Holdings.

I clicked on the corporate profile, my eyes scanning the list of registered officers and financial beneficiaries.

There was Daniel.

There was Olivia.

And right beneath them, listed as the primary shareholder and owner of a multi-million-dollar real estate portfolio, was a woman whose name I had never heard in my life.

Elena Vance.

And according to the property deeds attached to the corporate filing, they hadn't just been spending my deployment money on luxury bags and dinners. They had purchased a luxury beachfront condo in Miami—using my military salary as collateral for the mortgage.
