Chapter 3 - The Locked Door

I sidestepped Daniel's reach so fast he nearly stumbled over the edge of the dining room rug. The bank representative's voice crackled through the speaker, crisp and professional.

"Ma'am, to confirm, you want to freeze your primary checking, savings, and all secondary user cards linked to Daniel Mitchell?"

"Yes," I said clearly. "Freeze them all. Effective immediately."

"Done," the representative replied. "All authorized cards have been deactivated, and a fraud investigation case has been opened."

The call disconnected with a soft click.

The living room erupted.

"Are you insane?!" Daniel roared, his face turning a deep, ugly shade of red. He slammed his fist down on the back of the sofa. "Do you have any idea what you just did? My card was supposed to pay for the catering! My mother's prescriptions are tied to that account! You just cut off our entire livelihood over a silly misunderstanding!"

"A misunderstanding?" I snapped back, my military discipline finally giving way to a mother's fury. I stepped right into his space, forcing him to take a backward step. "You stole from me, Daniel. You and your family looted my accounts while I was away serving my country. You couldn't even keep my daughter warm, but you had thousands of dollars to spare for luxury bags and Miami trips?"

Olivia pushed past her son, her face twisted in absolute disgust. "You ungrateful little brat! We gave you a family! We watched your child while you ran off to play hero! Without us, you'd be nothing!"

"Without you, my daughter wouldn't have spent her evening freezing on a concrete balcony!" I shouted, pointing a finger toward the sliding glass door. "Get out. All of you. Pack your things right now, or I will have the military police escort you off this property."

My father-in-law, who had been quietly holding Emma in the corner, finally stood up and handed the little girl back to me. Emma buried her face in my shoulder again, her small frame still shivering slightly. He looked at Olivia with a tired expression. "Mother, let's just go. We've pushed this too far."

"Shut up, Arthur!" Olivia snapped, turning her fury on her husband. "Don't you dare fold to her! This is our house too!"

"No, it's not," a cold voice interrupted from the doorway.

We all turned. My neighbor, Marcus, stood in the open front door. He was a retired Master Sergeant who lived across the street, a towering man with sharp eyes and zero patience for nonsense. He had clearly heard the shouting.

"I was coming over to welcome Sarah home," Marcus said, his deep voice carrying effortless authority as he stepped inside. He looked around the luxurious dining room, taking in the lobster platters, the wine stains on the tablecloth, and the panicked expressions of Daniel’s family. Then he looked at me, holding a shivering Emma. "Everything alright here, Sergeant Mitchell?"

"Just taking out the trash, Marcus," I replied evenly.

Marcus nodded slowly, cracking his knuckles. "Need a hand? I'm off duty and I've got plenty of heavy lifting experience."

Olivia glared at Marcus, her voice trembling with indignation. "This is a private family matter! You have no right—"

"Lady," Marcus interrupted, stepping closer to her with an intimidating scowl, "I served three tours in the sandbox. I know what parasites look like when they've been caught stealing from the supply line. You've got ten minutes to pack your bags before I help your son find out what it's like to be physically thrown onto the sidewalk."

Daniel swallowed hard, looking at Marcus's broad shoulders, then back at me. He realized the game was over. The free money faucet had run dry.

"Fine," Daniel spat, his voice shaking with humiliation and rage. "We'll leave. But don't expect me to ever speak to you again, Sarah. We're done."

May you like

"That," I said, holding Emma tightly as she watched the chaos with wide, frightened eyes, "is the first intelligent thing you've said all night."
