Chapter 5 - The Stranger at the Door

The blue light of my laptop screen illuminated the dark living room as I stared at the property deed in utter disbelief. A multi-million-dollar beachfront condo in Miami, fully financed under a corporate shell company, with my military pay stubs and deployment bonuses listed as the primary income source.

They hadn't just been living comfortably. They had built an entire second life behind my back, using my name as a financial shield while treating me like an absent ATM machine.

Before I could process the full scale of the deception, a sharp, urgent knock rattled the front door.

I froze.

The knock came again louder this time, accompanied by the muffled sound of someone jiggling the doorknob.

My military instincts kicked in instantly. I closed the laptop, slipped my hand into the pocket of my tactical jacket hanging by the door where I had left a concealed pocket knife, and slowly approached the entryway.

Emma was asleep down the hall, safely tucked away in her room. I wasn't going to let anyone near her.

I peered through the peephole.

Standing on my front porch wasn't Daniel. It wasn't Olivia, nor was it any of their friends.

It was a woman I had never seen before.

She wore a tailored designer trench coat, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek bun, and she looked frantic. She glanced nervously over her shoulder down the dark driveway before pounding on the door again.

"Open the door! I know someone's in there!" she hissed through the wood. "If Daniel's family sent you, you need to listen to me right now—everything they told you is a lie!"

I slowly unlocked the deadbolt, unlatched the safety chain, and pulled the door open wide, keeping my hand firmly in my pocket. The cold night air rushed in, carrying the scent of rain.

The woman stumbled backward, startled by my sudden appearance and the hard, unyielding look in my eyes.

"Who are you?" I demanded, my voice cutting through the quiet night like a razor.

The woman raised her hands defensively, her chest heaving as she stared at me in shock. "My name is Elena Vance," she gasped, her eyes wide with terror. "And Daniel has been lying to both of us for three years."
