Chapter 8 - The Midnight Breach

The screen of my phone glared in the dim light of the entryway, flashing red against the dark wood.

CRITICAL ALERT: Unauthorized wire transfer attempt detected on secondary reserve vault.

My blood ran cold. They weren't just running away; they were making one final, desperate grab to clean out whatever hidden assets remained before the freezing order fully locked down the system.

"What is it?" Elena asked, leaning closer, her eyes widening as she saw the alert flashing on my screen.

"They're trying to breach the secondary vault," I said, my voice dropping an octave as pure, unadulterated combat fury surged through my veins. "Daniel thinks he can bypass the freeze using an emergency administrative override code he stole from me three years ago."

I didn't hesitate. I grabbed my laptop off the coffee table where I had tossed it earlier, flipped it open with violent speed, and slammed my fingers across the keyboard. The system interface was sluggish, choking under the weight of the bank's active fraud investigation.

"Can you stop them?" Elena asked, hovering anxiously over my shoulder.

"Watch me," I muttered.

I bypassed the standard login screen, deploying a secure military-grade diagnostic tool I kept partitioned on my hard drive for field communications. It was a secure terminal override—something I had used in tactical operations to lock down compromised network nodes. If Daniel was trying to access the secondary vault through an external API connection, I could trace his IP address and trap his credentials in an infinite security loop before the transfer could clear.

Lines of green text cascaded down the dark screen.

Target IP identified: Mobile Terminal, Downtown Grand Hotel, Suite 412.

Authentication attempt in progress...

Override code accepted...

Transfer pending: $50,000.00 to offshore entity.

"He's overriding the freeze right now!" Elena gasped, pointing at the progress bar ticking upward toward completion. 90%... 95%...

"Not on my watch," I growled.

I slammed the final encryption key into the terminal, executing a hard system lockout that severed all active API sessions linked to my social security number across every banking institution in the country.

The progress bar froze dead at 99%.

A sharp, brilliant red error box flashed across the screen:

ACCESS DENIED. PERMANENT LOCKOUT TRIGGERED. FEDERAL AUTHORITIES NOTIFIED.

The room went dead silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator down the hall.

On the screen, Daniel's remote access session violently terminated, leaving behind a digital paper trail so clean and traceable that even local law enforcement would be able to track his exact GPS coordinates within seconds.

I let out a slow, steady breath, my hands resting flat on the kitchen island. I had just locked down every penny they had left.

"He's going to be furious," Elena whispered, her voice trembling. "If Daniel realizes he's completely locked out and facing federal wire fraud charges, he won't run. He'll retaliate."

"Let him try," I said, standing up from the stool. I walked over to the hallway closet, reached behind the winter coats, and pulled out a heavy, locked steel case. I punched in the combination, popped the heavy latches, and lifted the lid.

Inside sat my service-issued sidearm, along with a secure dossier containing every official record of my military commendations and security clearances.

Elena stared at the weapon, her eyes going wide with alarm. "Sarah... what are you going to do?"

Before I could answer, the front security camera chime pinged softly on my phone.

I glanced down at the screen.

The live feed showed a sleek black sedan pulling slowly up my driveway, its headlights killed in the dark. The passenger door opened, and a tall silhouette stepped out onto the wet pavement, moving purposefully toward my front porch.

It wasn't Daniel.

May you like

It was a man in an expensive dark suit, holding a silver briefcase in one hand, looking directly into the porch camera with a chilling, predatory smile.
