Chapter 7 - The Paper Trail of Deception

The manila folder on the entryway table felt like a ticking bomb. I didn't invite Elena inside to sit on my living room furniture, but I didn't throw her out either. Instead, I pulled the front door shut against the freezing night wind, leaving just enough space between us to keep our guards up while we dissected the wreckage of our shared delusion.
I pulled out a sheaf of papers, flipping past the fraudulent death narrative Daniel had apparently spun to cover my long deployments. My eyes locked onto a series of bank statements printed from accounts I had never known existed.
"Look at the routing numbers," Elena said, her voice shaking as she pointed a manicured finger at a line of text. "That isn't just your paycheck being funneled into the Miami condo. That's a systematic liquidation of your assets. Every time you got a promotion, every hazard pay bonus, every deployment extension stipend—it was automatically routed through a shell company registered under Olivia's maiden name."
I stared at the numbers, my military training clicking into analytical overdrive. For three years, I had trusted Daniel's assurances that our finances were being safely invested for Emma's future. I had believed his gentle reassurances over video calls from overseas, thinking he was holding down the fort while I carried the physical burden of our family's survival.
"He told me we needed to keep our finances separate on paper for tax purposes during my military service," I said, the realization tasting like poison on my tongue. "He used my power of attorney to execute the paperwork while I was downrange."
"He used mine, too," Elena whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek with the back of her hand. She looked exhausted, her sophisticated facade completely stripped away by betrayal. "He convinced me to sign over management rights to our real estate investments under the guise of 'family protection.' If I hadn't looked into his desk tonight while he was out celebrating with his mother, I never would have known about you. I never would have known he was bleeding two women dry at the same time."
I looked up from the papers, studying Elena's face. There was no mistaking the raw, agonizing shock in her eyes. She had been played just as thoroughly as I had—perhaps even more maliciously, because she had believed she was building a future with a man who legally belonged to someone else.
"Where is he now?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm.
Elena blinked, startled by the deadly coldness in my tone. "He... he said he and his mother were going to check into a hotel downtown after you threw them out. But before he left the condo tonight, I heard him on the phone with someone. He wasn't panicking about losing you, Sarah. He was panicking about something called the Trustee Account."
My eyes narrowed. "What Trustee Account?"
"I don't know the details," Elena admitted, shaking her head frantically. "He whispered into the phone, telling Olivia that if you managed to audit the primary accounts before midnight, the federal oversight clause would trigger, and everything they stole would be legally classified as grand larceny across state lines. He said... he said they needed to liquidate the final offshore holdings before morning, or they were going to prison."
Before I could process the gravity of her words, my phone buzzed violently on the entryway table.
It was an automated security alert from my bank's fraud prevention unit.
