Chapter 1 - The Breach at the Threshold

The third and heaviest impact rattled the reinforced oak paneling of the kitchen door, sending a fine dust shivering down from the crown molding.

Emma’s fingers instinctively tightened around the fabric of Adrian’s sleeve, her knuckles white against the dark wool. Every instinct she had cultivated over six months of quiet survival screamed at her to run, to hide, to shrink into the shadows where Daniel couldn't find her. But the warm, unyielding weight of Adrian Blackwood standing directly in front of her created a barrier far more solid than any kitchen counter.

“Open up, Emma! I know you're in there!” Daniel’s voice tore through the wood, muffled yet venomous, carrying that familiar, jagged edge that made her stomach violently contract. “Don't make me come in and drag you out by your hair in front of your rich little friends!”

Adrian didn't flinch. His jaw was locked so tight a muscle ticked rhythmically beneath his skin. His cold gray eyes, usually reserved for boardrooms and acquisition negotiations, were fixed on the locked brass handle.

“Stay behind me,” Adrian repeated, his voice dangerously low, stripped of any corporate polish.

Before Emma could draw another ragged breath, Adrian reached out, his long fingers wrapping around the brass knob. With a swift, fluid motion, he turned it and pulled the door inward.

The sudden absence of resistance sent Daniel stumbling forward across the threshold. He caught himself on the marble counter, his chest heaving, his face twisted in an ugly sneer of entitlement and rage. He was dressed in a cheap, rumpled leather jacket, his dark hair unwashed, smelling faintly of stale cigarette smoke and cheap whiskey.

Daniel’s eyes snapped up, ready to unleash another torrent of abuse at Emma, but they froze mid-air when they collided with Adrian Blackwood.

Daniel blinked, his brain clearly struggling to process the imposing figure of the billionaire estate owner towering over him in a bespoke black suit. For a fraction of a second, the bravado flickered, replaced by sudden confusion.

“Who the hell are you?” Daniel snarled, recovering his aggressive posture as he pushed himself upright. “This is a private matter. Emma, get over here.”

Emma shrank further back into the shadow of the industrial pantry, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Adrian didn't move an inch. He simply stared down at Daniel, his gaze as cold and devoid of emotion as an executioner’s blade.

“You have five seconds to explain why you are trespassing on private property,” Adrian said, each word dropping like a lead weight into the silent kitchen. “And then I am going to have my security team feed you to the local police department.”

Daniel’s face flushed a deep, mottled red. He took a threatening step forward, pointing a trembling finger at Adrian’s chest. “You don't know who you're dealing with, pal. Emma belongs to me. She owes me. If she thinks some rich prick can protect her—”

Daniel never finished the sentence.

Adrian’s hand shot out with terrifying speed, catching Daniel by the collar of his leather jacket and hoisting him off his feet with effortless power, slamming him hard against the exterior hallway wall with a deafening thud.
