Chapter 3 - The Confession in the Dark

“Emma.”
The sound of his voice wasn't cold anymore. It carried a strange, grounded steadiness that coaxed her head up despite her overwhelming shame. She looked at him through a blur of tears, the purple bruise beneath her eye standing out in stark contrast against her pale skin.
“He... he’s going to come back,” Emma whispered, her voice cracking as she wiped frantically at her cheeks. “You don't understand, Mr. Blackwood. You can ban him from the estate, but he knows where my apartment is. He knows my schedule. If I go back there tonight—”
“You aren't going back there,” Adrian interrupted, his tone leaving zero room for argument.
Emma blinked, startled. “Sir?”
“You heard me,” Adrian said, standing up and offering her a steady hand. When she hesitated, he simply reached down, gripped her forearm gently, and pulled her smoothly to her feet. “You aren't stepping foot off this property until we dismantle whatever hold that piece of garbage has over you.”
“I can’t just stay here,” Emma protested, shaking her head as panic fluttered in her chest. “I’m a housekeeper. I have a tiny studio apartment downtown. I have rent, I have responsibilities—”
“Your responsibility right now is not getting yourself killed,” Adrian cut her off, turning away to retrieve his suit jacket from the chair where he had tossed it earlier. He slipped it back on, his shoulders squaring. “Marcus!”
A moment later, the security chief reappeared at the kitchen entrance, his posture rigid. “Yes, Mr. Blackwood?”
“Send a detail to Emma’s apartment immediately. Pack up everything she owns—clothes, documents, personal belongings—and bring it to the north guest wing. She is relocating to the main residence as of today.”
Emma’s jaw dropped. “Mr. Blackwood, you can’t do that! That’s completely inappropriate, I’m staff—”
“You are a survivor of domestic abuse hiding in plain sight under my roof, Emma, and I am a man who despises inefficiency—especially when it threatens my household,” Adrian said, turning to face her with an unyielding intensity. “Now. Are you going to tell me what he has on you, or do I have to hack his financial accounts and find out myself?”
Emma swallowed hard, her defenses completely shattered. She looked around the cavernous, gleaming kitchen, realizing that her carefully constructed wall of secrecy had been utterly demolished in less than ten minutes.
She took a shaky breath, looking down at her hands.
“It started six months ago,” Emma began, her voice barely audible over the hum of the appliances. “Before I started working here. Daniel... he ran up massive gambling debts with some very dangerous people downtown. When the loan sharks started breaking his fingers, he used my name. He forged my signature on high-interest loans, rental agreements, and shell accounts.”
Adrian stepped closer, listening in absolute, dangerous silence.
“When I found out and tried to leave him, he showed me the papers,” Emma continued, a fresh tear spilling over her lashes. “He said if I went to the police, the debt would legally fall entirely on me. He said he’d make sure I was arrested for wire fraud and forgery. And every time I tried to pack a bag... he reminded me who was holding the leash.”
Adrian’s face grew so still, so utterly devoid of warmth, that it looked carved from granite.
“Give me his full legal name,” Adrian said softly.
“Why?”

“Because by the time the sun sets today, Daniel won't have to worry about gambling debts anymore,” Adrian replied, his eyes flashing with a cold, predatory light. “He’ll be spending the next twenty years wishing he had never learned how to spell your name.”
