Chapter 9 - Descent into the Archives

The subterranean tunnels beneath the Hawthorne Estate smelled of cool limestone, dry paper, and aged mahogany.

Emma clutched the heavy brass key in her right hand while keeping pace with Adrian as they descended a spiraling wrought-iron staircase hidden behind a false bookcase in the main library. The red emergency lights cast long, dramatic shadows against the damp stone walls, pulsing rhythmically in time with their footsteps.

Above them, muffled thuds and the distant grinding of heavy machinery echoed through the foundations—Vance and his remaining operatives were tearing into the maintenance shafts, trying to brute-force their way down.

“How much farther?” Emma asked, her voice tight with tension as she navigated the uneven stone steps.

“Just past the old wine cellar,” Adrian replied over his shoulder, keeping his weapon drawn and scanning the dark corridor ahead. “The vault is built into the bedrock. Not even a tactical explosive charge can crack it without the proper authorization sequence.”

They rounded a final sharp corner, coming face to face with a massive, circular iron door set directly into the natural rock face. The door was covered in complex mechanical gears, a central digital keypad, and a smooth, circular glass scanner.

Adrian stepped aside, gesturing toward the panel. “Your turn, Emma.”

Emma stepped forward, her heart hammering against her ribs. She placed her palm flat against the glass scanner.

For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The red indicator light flashed a stubborn crimson.

Access Denied.

Emma swallowed hard, her breath catching. “It... it’s not recognizing me. The system must be locked out.”

“Try again,” Adrian urged calmly, stepping closer to shield her flank. “Concentrate. Your father designed this for you.”

Emma closed her eyes, took a deep, steadying breath, and pressed her hand against the glass once more, consciously relaxing her grip.

A soft, melodic chime echoed from the iron door.

The red light blinked green. Access Granted.

With a deep, mechanical groan, the massive circular gears inside the vault door began to spin, internal bolts sliding back with heavy, satisfying thuds as the iron portal slowly swung outward, releasing a plume of cool, dust-free air that smelled of history and long-kept secrets.

Emma stepped across the threshold, raising her flashlight into the dark interior.

Illuminated in the beam were rows of metal filing cabinets, heavy leather-bound ledgers, and in the center of the room, a pristine glass display case holding a single, thick document bearing her father’s signature.

“We found it,” Emma whispered, walking slowly toward the center of the room.

Before Adrian could follow her inside, a loud, metallic screech echoed from the tunnel behind them, followed by the sound of heavy boots hitting the stone floor.

“Well, well, well,” Director Vance’s voice echoed down the corridor, cold and triumphant. “Family reunions are always so touching.”
