Chapter 8 - The Red Grid

The sudden wail of the emergency klaxon sliced through the tension in the room like a razor blade.

Vance’s confident smirk flickered for a split second as the overhead hallway lights shifted from a warm amber to a harsh, pulsating crimson. The entire estate’s emergency lockdown protocol—an isolated, analog backup system independent of the digital grid Vance had compromised—had just engaged.

“What is this?” Vance snarled, his eyes darting upward.

“An analog failsafe,” Adrian stated coldly, a dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. “You thought you hacked my digital network, Vance? My grandfather built this house during the Cold War. The core wiring doesn't touch the internet.”

With a heavy, mechanical shriek, massive steel security shutters dropped from the ceiling across every corridor entry point in the north wing, slamming into the floor with deafening force.

Vance leaped backward just in time to avoid being crushed by the descending steel barrier, leaving him entirely cut off from the main stairwell—and trapping him inside the corridor directly outside the suite.

“Open this door, Blackwood!” Vance’s voice echoed muffled through the thick steel barrier. “You can't lock down an entire corporation! The board will strip you of every asset you own by morning!”

Adrian ignored him. He turned quickly toward Emma, who was stepping out from behind the column, her face pale but resolute.

“Are you alright?” Adrian asked, his voice shedding its icy exterior for a raw, urgent concern.

“I’m fine,” Emma said, though her hands were shaking. She looked down at the unconscious tactical operatives on the floor, then back at Adrian. “He mentioned the archives. He knows my father hid the final audit papers here. If Vance gets access to the estate mainframe—”

“He won't,” Adrian interrupted, grabbing her arm gently. “Because those papers aren't digital. They’re locked in a physical vault beneath the library, and only a direct bloodline descendant of Arthur Whitaker can open the biometric seal.”

Emma stared at him in stunned silence. “My father... set a biometric vault?”

“He knew this day would come,” Adrian said grimly. “He knew someone on the board was selling the company out from under him. He trusted my grandfather to keep it safe until you were old enough to claim it.”

Adrian walked over to the shattered desk, grabbed the manila folder and a heavy brass key from the hidden wall compartment, and handed them to her.

“We need to move now, before Vance figures out how to override the analog shutters from the auxiliary maintenance shaft.”
