Chapter 7 - The Voice in the Hallway

The heavy rubber soles of tactical boots scuffed against the hallway parquet, accompanied by the slow, mocking sound of clapping.

Slowly, a third figure emerged from the shadows of the north wing corridor. This man wore no tactical helmet or balaclava. He wore an immaculate charcoal tailored suit that looked entirely out of place amidst a violent estate intrusion. In his right hand, he casually twirled a heavy, suppressed automatic pistol, his face split by an easy, predatory grin.

“Impressive, Mr. Blackwood,” Director Vance—the corporate shadow who had haunted the periphery of the syndicate—called out smoothly, stopping just outside the shattered doorway. “I always knew the master of the Hawthorne Estate kept his reflexes sharp, but hand-to-hand elimination of Vanguard’s elite extraction squad? You almost live up to the family name.”

Adrian didn't lower his weapon. He kept the barrel leveled precisely at the center of Vance’s chest, his stance rigid. “You’re trespassing, Vance. And your men are currently bleeding out on my floor. You have about thirty seconds before my security detail swarms this wing.”

Vance let out a low, amused chuckle, shaking his head. “Your security detail, Adrian, is currently dealing with a coordinated localized power grid failure across three neighboring districts. The local police dispatch lines have been rerouted to a dead loop. Nobody is coming.”

Emma peered out from her hiding spot near the bathroom column, her breath catching in her throat as she recognized the man standing in the doorway. It was the same man who had orchestrated the hostile buyout of her father’s firm years ago—the face she had seen in old corporate broadsheets before her family's world shattered.

Vance shifted his gaze past Adrian, his eyes locking onto Emma with a cold, glittering intensity.

“Ah, and look who else is here,” Vance purred, taking a slow step across the splintered threshold. “The missing piece of the puzzle. We’ve been looking everywhere for you, Miss Whitaker. Your little boyfriend Daniel tried to play hardball, but he lacked the proper disposition for long-term survival.”

Adrian stepped forward, his body physically blocking Vance’s line of sight to Emma. “If you take another step, you won't live to see the elevator.”

“Oh, I don't need to take another step,” Vance replied coolly, raising his suppressed pistol just a fraction of an inch higher. “Because I didn't come here to negotiate a buyout. I came here to ensure the Whitaker bloodline ends permanently, right alongside anyone foolish enough to harbor it.”

Before Vance could squeeze the trigger, a blinding flash of red light suddenly erupted from the hallway ceiling behind him, accompanied by a sharp, automated klaxon.
