Chapter 10 - Beyond the Iron Gates

Three days later, the private airstrip in Teterboro was bathed in the warm, golden glow of an autumn sunset. A sleek, twin-engine Gulfstream private jet idled on the tarmac, its turbine engines humming with a low, steady power that promised distance, privacy, and absolute freedom.

Inside the cabin, the leather seating was soft, the lighting warm, and the air conditioning hummed quietly against the chill of the evening.

Elena sat by the window, watching the Manhattan skyline shrink into the distance as the aircraft lifted off the runway, climbing steadily into the pink and orange clouds above the Atlantic. She wore a simple white linen blouse and a light wool coat, her hands resting comfortably in her lap.

Across the aisle, Luca sat working quietly on a tablet, though he wasn't looking at financial ledgers or tactical security grids this time. He was looking at flight itineraries for the Mediterranean coast—amalfi cliffs, quiet coastal villas, and towns where nobody knew his name, his past, or his empire.

He set the tablet down on the small mahogany table between them, reached across the aisle, and took her hand.

"No security details," Luca said, his dark eyes warm and steady. "No encrypted comms channels. No ledgers to audit. Just us."

Elena squeezed his hand back, her smile radiant and completely unburdened. "Good. Because if you brought a laptop, I was going to throw it out the emergency exit."

Luca laughed—a rich, genuine sound that he had rarely allowed himself to make in the dark years before she walked into his office.

Down below, the vast expanse of the ocean stretched out infinitely into the twilight, swallowing the last traces of the city they had left behind. The war was over. The blood on the silk dress was a distant memory of a storm that had tried to destroy them and failed.

They had built their empire out of the wreckage of their past, but tonight, they were simply two people flying toward a horizon that belonged entirely to them.
