Chapter 4 - The Price of a Ledger

The distance between the two syndicate bosses was barely twenty feet, yet the air crackled with enough lethal tension to ignite the rain.

Luca walked slowly toward Mercer, his hands resting easily at his sides, his dark eyes locked onto the older man's smug expression. Behind Mercer, the doors of the escort SUV popped open, and four heavily armed operatives spilled out onto the wet pavement, raising their weapons toward Luca.

Luca didn't even glance at them.

"Put your toys away, Adrian," Luca said, his voice cutting through the hiss of the rain with terrifying calm. "Unless you want your men to die in a place where no one will ever find their bones."

Mercer chuckled, a dry, mocking sound. "You always were arrogant, Valenti. You think because you spent the last two years laundering your dirty money into clean real estate and charity foundations that you've somehow become a legitimate citizen. You're a criminal wearing a Brioni suit. Just like me."

"No, Adrian," Luca stopped five feet away, towering over Mercer by half a head. "That is where you made your mistake. I built my empire by knowing who I was. You built yours by preying on people who couldn't fight back."

"Like the accountant?" Mercer sneered, his eyes glancing toward the dark windows of the Suburban where Elena sat watching. "She's just a pencil-pusher, Luca. A fat little clerk who crunches numbers and drinks herbal tea. Why are you risking a war over a woman who doesn't even know how to pull a trigger?"

Before the words had finished echoing off the rusted metal walls of the warehouse, the passenger door of the Suburban swung open.

Elena stepped out into the rain.

She wasn't wearing her blood-soaked silk dress anymore. She wore a dark tailored pantsuit, her posture straight, her gaze steady and unyielding. She didn't look like a victim waiting for protection. She looked like the architect of empires.

Mercer’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second.

"You," Mercer muttered, narrowing his eyes. "You're supposed to be in Queens, crying in a closet."

"I was never in Queens, Mr. Mercer," Elena said, her voice clear, cold, and entirely devoid of fear. "And I don't cry when things get difficult. I audit them."

She reached into her coat pocket, pulled out a sleek silver flash drive, and held it up between two fingers so the yard lights caught the metallic surface.

"Do you know what this is?" she asked.

Mercer’s expression hardened, a flicker of genuine unease crossing his features for the first time. "What is that?"

"This is the complete, unencrypted financial history of every shell corporation, offshore account, and illegal kickback scheme you've operated over the last fifteen years," Elena said, her voice ringing clear across the yard. "Every bribe paid to city inspectors, every dollar laundered through the Hawthorne Foundation, every wire transfer sent to your political proxies—it's all right here. I downloaded it from your primary server three weeks ago as an insurance policy against men exactly like you."

Mercer’s face went pale. His polished composure shattered in an instant, revealing the desperate, cornered predator beneath.

"Kill them," Mercer snarled, turning frantically toward his guards. "Kill them both right now and take that drive!"

The four operatives raised their weapons—but before their fingers could squeeze the triggers, the surrounding shadows erupted with gunfire.

Crack! Crack! Crack!

From atop the rusted roofs of the freight cars, Miller and his tactical squad opened fire with suppressed precision rifles. Sparks flew from the pavement around Mercer’s men as their weapons were shot directly out of their hands. Two operatives dropped to their knees, disarmed and bleeding from flesh wounds, while the other two threw their hands into the air and hit the asphalt.

Mercer spun around, reaching desperately for the hidden pistol beneath his overcoat—but Luca was already there.

In a flash of violent motion, Luca closed the distance, grabbed Mercer by the throat, and slammed him violently against the side of the Maybach. The heavy metal dented inward with a loud crash.

Luca pressed the cold steel barrel of his Sig Sauer directly beneath Mercer’s chin.

"You wanted a war, Adrian," Luca whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Welcome to the front lines."
