Chapter 2 - The Breach at Midnight

Downstairs, the grand foyer of the Valenti estate was silent, shadowed, and draped in the heavy elegance of mahogany and polished marble. The rain outside lashed against the tall stained-glass windows, turning the sprawling Manhattan skyline into a smear of weeping neon lights.
Luca walked down the grand staircase without making a sound, his hand resting casually inside the pocket of his trousers, wrapped around the checkered grip of a custom Sig Sauer P226. Elena followed a few steps behind him, refusing to stay behind in the bedroom despite his initial warning. She had washed the blood from her hands, but the memory of the struggle still clung to her like a second skin.
"Stay behind the pillar," Luca whispered without turning around.
"I'm not hiding, Luca," she replied quietly.
At the far end of the foyer, near the heavy oak service doors leading to the subterranean garage, a faint click echoed through the hall. Not a knock. Not a doorbell. The distinct, metallic sound of a master bypass tool manipulating a high-security deadbolt.
Mercer wasn't sending negotiators. He was sending executioners to retrieve Shaw’s body and wipe the slate clean before dawn.
Luca stepped into the deep shadows beside the curved staircase, blending seamlessly into the darkness of the hall. His breathing was slow, measured, completely devoid of adrenaline-fueled panic. This was his element. This was the world he had crawled out of, and the world he knew how to govern with absolute, unforgiving finality.
The heavy oak door swung open six inches.
A gloved hand slipped inside, gripping the frame, followed by a tall figure clad in matte-black tactical gear. A silencer-tipped firearm swept the room in a practiced, fluid arc.
The intruder didn't even see Luca move.
In a blur of controlled violence, Luca crossed the floor in three silent strides, grabbed the operative by the tactical vest, and slammed him face-first into the marble wall with enough force to shatter stone. The man's weapon clattered harmlessly against the floor tiles as Luca swept his leg out, dropping him heavily to his knees.
"Who sent you?" Luca hissed, pressing the cold barrel of his Sig Sauer against the base of the man's skull.
The operative choked out a ragged breath, blood pooling from his nose where it had met the marble. "Mercer... command... secure the target..."
"Tell Mercer his dog is dead," Luca whispered, his voice like grinding ice. "And tell him I'm coming for the kennel."
Before the man could reply, a second shadow darkened the open doorway. Another operative stepped into the foyer, weapon raised, eyes scanning the dim light.
Elena didn't hesitate.
From her position behind the marble pillar, she kicked a heavy brass umbrella stand across the polished floor. The metallic clatter echoed loudly through the foyer, drawing the second operative's attention instantly away from Luca.
In that split second of distraction, Luca pivoted, raised his sidearm, and fired twice.
Pffft. Pffft.
The silenced rounds found their mark with brutal precision. The second operative dropped like a stone, disappearing into the shadows of the doorway.
The foyer fell deathly silent once more, save for the steady patter of rain against the glass and the ragged breathing of the first operative pinned against the wall. Luca looked down at the man, his face an impenetrable mask of cold fury.
"Get up," Luca ordered.
The man trembled, clutching his broken nose. "What... what do you want with me?"
"You're going to make a phone call," Luca said, pulling Shaw’s encrypted smartphone from his pocket and dropping it onto the floor between the man's knees. "You're going to call Adrian Mercer, and you're going to tell him the package has been secured, and that you need him to meet you at the abandoned rail yard in Long Island to inspect the cargo personally."
The operative's eyes widened in sheer terror. "He'll know it's a trap. Mercer never leaves his compound without a full battalion."

"Mercer thinks I'm a corporate businessman who spends his days signing checks and hiding behind attorneys," Luca replied, stepping closer, the muzzle of his gun pressing harder against the man's neck. "He thinks he can reach into my house and touch what is mine. Let's see how brave he is when he walks into a graveyard of his own making."
