Chapter 9 - The Final Audit

The heavy oak doors of the dining room burst open behind Vance, and two of Miller’s tactical operatives stepped into the room, their movements precise, silent, and absolute.
Vance swallowed hard, his aristocratic composure entirely shattered. He looked at the two armed men, then back at Luca, his voice trembling despite his best efforts to maintain control.
"You can't do this, Valenti," Vance hissed, stepping backward. "If I go down, I take half the city's political establishment with me. Judges, mayors, commissioners—they'll all fall!"
"Let them fall," Luca said, his voice like grinding stone. "I told you, Adrian Mercer made the mistake of thinking I was a criminal wearing a suit. You made the mistake of thinking I wanted a seat at your corrupt table. This city is done paying for your syndicate's games."
Luca nodded slightly toward the operatives.
In one swift, practiced motion, the operatives stepped forward, secured Vance’s arms behind his back, and relieved him of his phone, his briefcase, and his expensive gold-rimmed glasses.
"Take him out through the service elevator," Luca instructed calmly. "Deliver him directly to the federal marshals waiting at the secondary extraction point. Tell them the audit is complete."
"Understood, Boss," one of the operatives muttered, hauling Vance toward the rear service corridor as the disgraced former prosecutor cursed and kicked uselessly against the polished floor.
The heavy doors clicked shut behind them, plunging the formal dining room back into absolute silence.
Elena sat quietly at the table, taking a slow sip of her tea as she looked across at Luca. A faint, knowing smile played across her lips.
"Well," she murmured, setting her cup down. "That meeting certainly cut into our morning schedule."
Luca walked back around the table, stopped behind her chair, and rested his hands gently on her shoulders. He leaned down, pressing his forehead lightly against hers.
"You realize, of course, that you are the most dangerous woman in Manhattan," Luca whispered, his voice rough with a deep, unspoken affection that he had never allowed himself to show anyone else.
"I am simply thorough," Elena corrected softly, turning her head to press her cheek against his rough hand. "And I don't like people who try to break into our home."
Luca pulled her chair back, helping her to her feet, and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. For the first time in his life, the dark weight of his past—the syndicates, the guns, the endless paranoia of the underworld—felt completely distant, washed away by the steady rhythm of her breathing and the warmth of her presence.
"So," Luca murmured against her hair. "Now that the books are balanced, what does the Comptroller recommend we do with the rest of our day?"
Elena smiled, her arms sliding up around his neck, pulling him down until their lips were barely an inch apart.
May you like
"I believe," she whispered, "it's time we finally take that vacation."
