Chapter 3 - The Long Island Trap

The abandoned rail yard in Long Island sat like a rusted scar against the dark waterfront, its corrugated metal warehouses looming skeletal and empty under the weeping night sky. Rows of abandoned freight cars stretched into the darkness like the ribs of long-dead leviathans, their sides streaked with peeling paint and decades of industrial grime.

In the center of the main switching yard, idling quietly with its headlights off, sat a black armored Suburban.

Inside the vehicle, the heat hummed softly against the chill. Luca sat in the driver's seat, his eyes fixed on the rearview mirror where the distant sweep of headlights cut through the heavy rain. Beside him, Elena sat upright, her hands folded tightly in her lap. She wore a heavy wool trench coat over her clothes, her dark hair pulled back into a severe, practical knot.

"You should have stayed at the house," Luca said for the fourth time since they left Manhattan.

"If Mercer thinks he can threaten my family and send men into your home, this is no longer just your war, Luca," Elena replied without looking at him, her voice carrying a calm, unbreakable resolve. "I am the one who kept the ledger. I am the one he wants to break. If you go into his stronghold without me as bait, he will simply vanish into the shadows again."

"Bait," Luca muttered, shaking his head. "I didn't bring you here to be bait, Elena."

"You brought me because you knew I wouldn't let you leave me behind," she countered quietly, turning her head to meet his gaze. "We built this new life together out of the wreckage of your past. I am not going to sit in a gilded cage while you fight a war on my behalf."

Before Luca could argue further, his radio crackled with a burst of static.

"Target approaching from the west access road," Miller’s voice echoed through the encrypted channel from a surveillance van parked three blocks away. "Two black Maybachs and an escort SUV. Total personnel count: twelve armed combatants. Mercer is in the lead vehicle."

Luca reached down, checking the magazine of his Sig Sauer with a practiced click before sliding it back into his shoulder holster. He reached into the glove compartment, pulled out a heavy tactical radio, and clipped it to his lapel.

"Let them enter the kill zone," Luca instructed calmly. "Once they pass the third warehouse, seal the exits."

"Copy that, Boss. Iron cage closing in three, two, one..."

Outside, the dual headlights of Mercer’s convoy swept across the rusted sides of the freight cars as the vehicles rolled slowly into the heart of the rail yard. The lead Maybach came to a smooth halt twenty yards from Luca’s Suburban, its engine idling with a low, expensive purr.

For a long moment, nothing moved. The rain hammered against the metal roofs, filling the silence with a relentless white noise.

Then, the rear door of the Maybach swung open.

Adrian Mercer stepped out into the rain. He was a tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke charcoal overcoat, looking more like a Wall Street hedge fund manager than a ruthless syndicate boss. He held a black umbrella in one hand, his expression calm, almost bored, as he surveyed the empty yard.

He took two steps forward, raised his voice against the wind, and shouted into the empty space.

"I expected better of you, Valenti!" Mercer called out, his voice carrying easily across the wet asphalt. "Hiding behind dead men and cheap tricks in a scrap yard? I thought you left your gutter tactics behind when you started playing CEO!"

The driver's side door of the Suburban clicked open.

Luca stepped out into the rain, his tall frame cutting a sharp, intimidating silhouette against the headlights. He didn't carry an umbrella. The cold water soaked into his dark tailored suit, but he didn't even flinch.

Mercer stopped walking, a thin, patronizing smile spreading across his face.

"Luca," Mercer said smoothly, spreading his arms. "Where's my man Shaw? And more importantly... where is the girl?"
