Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Visitor at the Gate

Luca stood up instantly, all traces of morning relaxation vanishing from his posture. He tapped the console, switching the main monitor to the live feed from the wrought-iron security gates at the front of the Valenti estate.
A sleek, midnight-blue Bentley Continental had pulled up directly in front of the reinforced perimeter wall. The driver's door swung open, and a man stepped out into the crisp morning air. He wore a bespoke Italian wool suit, silver hair combed back with military precision, and gold-rimmed glasses that caught the morning light.
Luca’s jaw tightened into a hard, unforgiving line.
"Victor Vance," Luca murmured, the name dropping like lead onto the heavy silence of the study.
Elena stepped closer to the screen, her brow furrowing. "Vance? The federal prosecutor who spent three years trying to build a RICO case against your logistics network before resigning to head private corporate security?"
"He's not a prosecutor anymore," Luca said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Victor is the head of the Atlantic Syndicate's legal and political front—the clean face of the underworld that sits on charity boards and dines with senators while men like Mercer do the dirty work."
On the monitor, Victor Vance walked calmly up to the intercom speaker, pressed the call button, and stared directly into the high-definition security camera with a cool, untouchable smile.
"Valenti," Vance’s voice echoed clearly through the study's speakers. "I know you're in there. And I know you just spent the last twelve hours dismantling Adrian Mercer’s little operation. May I come in? We have mutual interests to discuss."
Luca looked at the screen, then down at Elena. Her face was completely calm, her eyes sharp and analytical.
"He thinks he can walk right up to your front door because Mercer fell," Elena said quietly. "He thinks the power vacuum left by Mercer’s arrest is up for grabs, and he wants to see if you're willing to cut him in on the spoils."
"He's wrong," Luca said, reaching for his shoulder holster and snapping the leather strap into place. "Victor Vance doesn't want a partnership. He wants to find out if my defenses are still bleeding so he can drive a wedge through them."
"Then don't let him in through the intercom," Elena said, a sharp, brilliant smile touching her lips. "Invite him in. Let him sit across from both of us in the formal dining room. Let's show him what a balanced ledger really looks like."
Luca stared at her for a second, then a dark, dangerous grin broke across his face.
"Miller," Luca commanded, pressing the intercom button.
"Ready, Boss," Miller’s voice crackled back instantly.

"Open the front gates. Escort Mr. Vance directly to the formal dining room. And make sure our legal files are displayed prominently on the table before he arrives."
