Chapter 1 - The Ghost of Santa Barbara

The fluorescent lights of the West Hollywood hospital room hummed with a sterile, maddening persistence, casting long, stark shadows across Maria’s bandaged face.

Daniel sat frozen in the hard plastic chair, his knuckles white as he gripped the armrests. The words hung in the air between them like a physical weight, thick and suffocating.

“Andrew is not dead.”

“That’s impossible,” Daniel finally managed to choke out, his voice cracking. He stood up, pacing the tight confines of the room, running a hand through his hair. “The Coast Guard spent two weeks searching the Pacific. They found his yacht—the Seabird—smashed against the rocks off Santa Barbara with a hole torn clean through the hull. His wallet, his phone, his signet ring were all inside the cabin. We held a memorial service. Mother wore black for two years until her heart gave out.”

Maria shifted against her pillows, wincing as pain flashed across her bruised features. She raised a hand, her fingers splinted and wrapped in gauze, to touch the edge of her bandages.

“It was all theater, Mr. Whitmore,” Maria whispered, her voice rough. “Andrew was drowning in gambling debts, mixed up with people who didn't care that our family name was carved into half the skyscrapers in Los Angeles. He needed to disappear. He staged the wreck, swam to a pre-arranged dingoy three miles out, and walked away.”

Daniel stopped pacing. The room seemed to tilt. Andrew had always been the reckless one—the golden-boy sibling who treated Whitmore Holdings like an endless ATM and treated human beings like disposable assets. But faking his own death? Letting their mother die of a broken heart?

“If Andrew is alive,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, cold register, “where is he?”

Maria looked away, staring fixedly at the IV drip pole beside her bed. “I don't know where he is right now. But Vanessa knows. That’s why she tried to kill me.”

Daniel’s blood ran cold. “Vanessa? What does my fiancée have to do with my dead brother?”

“They were working together,” Maria said, turning her dark, terrified eyes back to his. “Before Andrew ‘died,’ he and Vanessa were seeing each other behind your back. She helped him set up the offshore accounts. When he vanished, she stayed behind to keep an eye on Whitmore Holdings—and to make sure you never looked too closely at the corporate restructuring accounts.”

Before Daniel could process the tectonic shift of what he was hearing, the hospital room door clicked open.

A young resident physician stepped inside, holding a clipboard. “Mr. Whitmore? There’s a detective outside asking for you. He says an emergency BOLO has been issued for your Beverly Hills estate regarding an ongoing financial fraud and assault investigation.”

Daniel stared at the doctor, then slowly turned back toward Maria. The trap wasn't just springing. It had already been locked.
