Chapter 8 - The Weight of the Past

The cold ocean wind whipped through the open roof hatch, tearing at Daniel’s hair as he pulled himself up onto the flat, gravel-covered roof of the coastal retreat.

The view was breathtaking and terrifying—hundreds of feet below, the jagged gray rocks of the Pacific cliffside met the churning, foam-flecked waves in a violent display of raw nature. There was nowhere left for Andrew to run. The perimeter fence dropped off into sheer vertical drop-offs on three sides, and Detective Vance’s tactical team was already securing the base of the ladder below.

Andrew stood near the crumbling concrete edge of the roof, his chest heaving, his hands raised slightly in a defensive posture.

“It’s over, Andrew,” Daniel said, his voice steady as he stepped across the gravel, keeping a safe distance. “No more shell corporations. No more faked deaths. No more innocent people getting hurt.”

Andrew let out a bitter, breathless laugh, shaking his head. “You always thought you were the smart one, didn't you? The dutiful older son who stayed behind to kiss mother’s ring and run the family empire while I was left with crumbs.”

“Crumbs?” Daniel’s voice rose, carrying all the suppressed grief and anger of six years spent mourning a brother who never really existed. “Mother gave you everything you asked for! She bailed you out of your gambling debts three times! She covered up your embezzlement scandals before you even graduated college! You didn't run away because you were oppressed, Andrew. You ran away because you were a coward who couldn't stand the thought of facing the consequences of your own actions.”

A dark, dangerous flash crossed Andrew’s face. He took a half-step closer to the crumbling edge of the cliffside drop. “At least I had the guts to take what I wanted instead of waiting for permission!”

Down below, the heavy thrum of a helicopter rotor began to vibrate through the air, cutting through the sound of the crashing waves. A dark, unmarked Coast Guard chopper crested the cliff line, its spotlight sweeping across the roof, bathing the brothers in blinding white illumination.

“Mr. Whitmore! Step away from the ledge!” Detective Vance’s voice echoed through a bullhorn from the courtyard below.

Andrew glanced down at the helicopter, then back at Daniel. A strange, eerie calm settled over his features—a look of absolute, unhinged detachment.

“Tell Maria I said goodbye,” Andrew whispered with a sickening smile.

Before Daniel could lunge forward, Andrew threw himself backward off the edge of the roof into the empty air.
