Chapter 9 - The Abyss Below

“Andrew! No!”
Daniel threw himself flat against the gravel, sliding to the very edge of the crumbling concrete parapet and reaching out a hand.
His fingers sliced through empty air.
Far below, Andrew’s body plummeted toward the churning white water, breaking the surface with a heavy splash before disappearing instantly into the dark, churning swells of the Pacific.
Daniel remained frozen on his stomach, staring down into the abyss, his breath caught in his throat. The helicopter hovered overhead, its downdraft kicking up dust and loose gravel around him, but the world seemed to have gone completely silent.
A heavy hand landed firmly on his shoulder.
“Mr. Whitmore. Step back,” Detective Vance’s voice said gently, pulling him away from the ledge.
Dazed and numb, Daniel allowed himself to be led back across the gravel and down the roof hatch into the quiet safety of the second-floor gallery. The adrenaline that had sustained him through the night was completely gone, replaced by a crushing, hollow weight.
In the foyer downstairs, paramedics and federal agents were already wrapping up the scene. Vanessa had been placed into the back of a transport van, her designer dress ruined by mud and soot, her face a mask of bitter defeat.
Detective Vance walked Daniel out to the front gravel courtyard where the morning sun was finally burning through the heavy coastal fog, casting a pale, golden light over the crashing waves.
“The Coast Guard has deployed rescue divers to scour the cove,” Vance said quietly, handing Daniel a cup of hot black coffee from a nearby unit. “Given the current and the jagged rocks... we need to prepare for the worst, Daniel.”
Daniel held the paper cup between both hands, letting the warmth seep into his numb fingers. He stared out at the horizon where the dark shape of a cargo ship could be seen sitting miles offshore—likely the very freighter Andrew and Vanessa had planned to use for their escape.
“He chose it,” Daniel said, his voice barely a whisper. “He spent six years running from a life he destroyed himself, and he chose to end it the exact same way.”
Vance nodded solemnly. “What about the corporate assets? With Andrew gone and Vanessa in custody, your legal team is going to have a massive fight on their hands to recover the twelve million transferred to the offshore accounts.”
“Let them fight,” Daniel replied, a cold, resolute strength returning to his voice. “Vanguard Holdings is dissolved. Every cent they stole is going back into the company accounts—and a permanent trust fund is being set up for Maria and her son.”

Vance clapped a reassuring hand on Daniel’s uninjured shoulder. “Take some time off, Mr. Whitmore. You’ve earned it.”
Daniel turned back toward his SUV, ready to head back to the hospital to check on Maria and little Noah. But as he reached for the door handle, his phone buzzed in his pocket with an incoming text message from an unknown, encrypted number.
