Chapter 7 - Breach at the Cliffside

The foyer exploded into sudden, blinding motion. Flashbang grenades didn't pop, but the heavy tactical boots of Detective Vance’s assault team thundered across the kitchen threshold and spilled into the hallway.
“Drop the weapon! Drop it now!” Vance roared, his service pistol raised and trained directly on Vanessa.
For a terrifying second, Vanessa’s finger tightened against the trigger of her suppressed automatic. Daniel didn't wait to see if she would fire; he dropped his weight sharply, ducking beneath her arm and shoving her hard against the wooden banister. The gun went off with a muffled thud, the bullet splintering the antique wainscoting inches above Daniel’s shoulder.
Before Vanessa could recover her balance, Detective Vance lunged forward, tackling her to the floor and slamming a pair of steel handcuffs around her wrists with professional brutality.
“Clear!” shouted a tactical officer, sweeping his carbine toward the stairs where Andrew had already spun around, sprinting upward toward the second-floor gallery.
“He’s heading for the roof hatch!” Daniel yelled, scrambling to his feet as he wiped a streak of dust from his shirt.
“Stay back, Mr. Whitmore!” Vance commanded, securing a struggling Vanessa before handing her off to a patrol officer. He signaled two tactical operators. “Take the stairs. Cut him off at the upper landing!”
Daniel ignored the warning. He didn't wait for the officers; he grabbed the wooden banister and vaulted up the steps two at a time, his heart hammering against his ribs. The ghosts of his childhood home—summers spent racing Andrew down these very halls—felt sickeningly close, twisted now by greed and betrayal.
He reached the second-floor landing just in time to see the heavy steel ladder leading to the roof hatch swinging downward, kicked open from above.
Andrew was already halfway up the rungs, scrambling toward the gray, fog-choked morning sky.
“Andrew!” Daniel shouted, hauling himself up the first three rungs of the ladder.

Andrew paused at the top, looking down through the hatch opening. His face was slick with sweat, his tailored suit jacket torn at the shoulder, revealing the desperate, cornered animal underneath.
“You can’t win, Daniel!” Andrew screamed over the howling coastal wind pouring through the open roof hatch. “Whitmore Holdings is already hollowed out! The legal paper trail leads back to you, not me! If I go down, I’m taking your entire legacy with me!”
