Chapter 6 - The Cold Steel of Betrayal

The cold, metallic ring of the suppressor barrel pressed harder against the back of Daniel’s neck, a cruel reminder of how easily trust could be weaponized. He stood frozen on the dusty hardwood floor of the coastal retreat, the rhythmic crashing of the Pacific waves outside providing a mocking, chaotic soundtrack to the trap.

Up on the grand staircase, Andrew adjusted his cuffs, his arrogant smirk returning as he watched Vanessa hold his brother at gunpoint.

“See, Daniel?” Andrew said, descending the remaining steps with unhurried grace. “You always were too predictable. You thought you were the hero riding in to save the day, but you just walked right into the final act of a play that was written six years ago.”

Daniel didn't flinch, though every muscle in his body coiled like a steel spring. He could feel the small, concealed microphone of his phone in his pocket—connected directly to Detective Vance’s tactical comm-channel. Come on, Vance, Daniel prayed silently. Move in.

“You’re delusional, Andrew,” Daniel said, his voice level, icy, and entirely devoid of fear. “You think you’re walking away with twelve million dollars? The federal BOLO is already active. Every port, every border, and every airstrip from here to the Mexican border is locked down.”

Vanessa let out a sharp, brittle laugh, the sound grating against the quiet timber of the foyer. “Do you really think we planned to catch a commercial flight, Daniel? Andrew’s associates don't use standard routes. A private freighter is sitting four miles off the Santa Barbara coast right now, waiting for us.”

“And you think they’ll share their profits with a desperate embezzler and a woman who just botched a murder in Beverly Hills?” Daniel taunted, trying to buy every second he could. “They don't leave witnesses, Vanessa. You’re just a loose end they haven't tied up yet.”

Vanessa’s expression flickered, a tiny crack of genuine panic breaking through her calculated facade. The gun barrel wavered for a fraction of an inch against Daniel’s neck.

Andrew noticed it instantly and stepped forward, his eyes narrowing. “Shut up, Daniel. Don't listen to him, Vanessa. He’s just playing psychological games.”

“Am I?” Daniel countered, keeping his eyes locked on his brother. “Ask her how many offshore accounts she controls that aren't registered under your name, Andrew. Ask her what happens to your share of the corporate treasury if she gets caught alone.”

Before Vanessa could respond or Andrew could interject, a loud, synchronized crash echoed from the back of the house as the heavy rear double doors were kicked open.

“LAPD! Drop your weapons! Nobody move!”
